One if the things that has been given to me to try is voice recognition software. I tried it out before I was given it and it really was awesome stuff and a great improvement over the first generation stuff I used some six years ago. With the modern software you can actually talk at normal speed without putting in artificial gaps or having to dramatically change the way one speaks. There's also room for controlling the computer using the voice aswell. Of course, nothing's ever simple. The software, called Dragon Naturally Speaking, runs only on Windows. This would require me to switch some of my work over to using Windows. It could be very tricky if I'm required to switch programming over because I use some Linux only libraries and I would have to rewrite those segments. That's some thing I could live with. However, even trying to install it raises problems. I have no Windows machine at work and my machine at home would require complete wiping of all OSs because my Windows partition, laid out in a manner that made sense in 2001, isn't big enough to cope with all the application data the program wants to dump on it. Thanks to
pplfichi, I have a spare hardrive and therefore the physical ability to get out of this mess. but it is going to be such a pain... Not to mention it brings up isues of computer maintenence that I've been ignoring, like should I finally upgrafe to XP and should I buy a legal copy? Finally, assuming I overcome all these hurdles and get it to work, there's the possibility of getting th RSI of the voice world if I speak too much.
Anyway. woth all that at least life won't be dull and it'll give me sonething to do if I get bored and want a challenge. Today I've come down with some kind of lurgy and I'm watching lots of House and getting bed rest.
