I hate it when fic authors go to great lengths to describe the voice of one of the characters, when it's always something like, "his voice was rich and deep, like dark chocolate and honey". And especially when it happens more than once in one chapter.
I also hate it when authors have the maddening urge (apparently) to give the characters nicknames. I mean, I get it if they want to call them with some cutesy nicknames in their posts, but it gets really annoying and oftentimes even embarrassing when they make other characters in fics use those nicknames. Like "Zira" or "Jamie" or "Sevvy". Fuck, I used "Sevvy" when I was 13! What does that tell you about the people who use those names?
And why is it so hard for people to write slash without making one character burst into tears over something trivial, or throw a tantrum at the other character because OMG YOU ARE JUST PLAYING WITH MY FEELINGS WHY CAN'T YOU TELL ME YOU LOVE ME?!!!
For example, I just read a pretty bad Sparrow/Norrington fic where first James whines that Jack only uses him for fucking, then he fucking flips and starts undressing and is all "fine, okay, whatever, you want to fuck, okay fuck me, I'm such a fucking martyr, you can use me as you like, see if I care, after all, I'm nobody, you don't care, do what you want, wah."
...What?
And there was another one, a very long series that actually started out pretty IC, but then at one point Jack fell into complete hysterics because HE COULDN'T HEAR THE CALL OF THE PEARL and James had to comfort him. Waaaaaaah.
And I don't mean that men never cry or overreact or act hysterically, but I mean it pisses me off when it's clearly completely OOC and over something so stupid and it's so sudden that it makes no sense - except that the other character then has to comfort the hysterical one and kiss their tears away. And besides, there's a difference between being hysterical and honest-to-god crying because you're in a desperate situation.
And I chose Jack/James fics as an example because they just happen to be what I've been reading lately. I'm sure I read a lot of similar Harry/Snape fics during the times I hadn't realised what a fucked up fandom the HP fandom was, and I've just pushed those memories deep into the farthest cranks and corners of my brain (seriously, I can't remember any good fics either).
And I wish the HP fandom would stop rubbing salt into old wounds. What purpose does the CC revelation serve? Everyone knew she plagiarised, and those who didn't probably didn't much care or just don't believe it. And while some people didn't know just how much she'd actually stolen... I just don't see what good this is gonna do. As for the Mrs Scribe report, that I get. There was a good reason to write out what exactly had happened, it was good to get it out in the open.
I don't like CC and I never got into her fics, and her VSD mainly annoyed me, but seriously. What purpose does this serve?
And feel free to disagree with me on everything, I haven't slept an eyeful so I might end up regretting posting this in this state, but eh. It's how I feel.
