So after this morning and feeling lousy about stuff, I decided that it was time to turn to my old standby of "Things to do when life gets you down." Yep, it was time to do something to my hair. Now, last time life went off the rails I believe that I dyed my whole head purple for a bit before shaving my head. Minor crises have been indicated by streaks, stripes, or hilarious attempts at giving myself bangs.
This time, however, realising the importance of self-esteem and self-respect I decided it was time to put my hair in the hands of a professional. Sort of. The cheapest salon in town wanted upwards of $35 for a cut. The cheapest walk-in place wanted $20. The professional Paul Mitchell teaching school a few blocks down? Wanted $12. Sold. Many many thanks to Jennie for her excitement and bravery. You see, I didn't just want a trim or some highlights. No, I told her to take my nearly waist-length hair, cut it to my shoulders, thin it and put in some layers.
This is where the fast/cheap/quality analogy comes in to play. Usually you get to pick two of those three things. In this case, I got cheap and quality at the expense of about 2.5 hours in the chair. Not that I'm complaining -- I had nowhere to be and it was fun to watch the new cut take shape, and my stylist got to take her time and make sure she was giving me what I wanted. The instructors would stop by occasionally and offer up tips, hints and suggestions.
When it was all said and done, I think everyone in the salon had come by to check me out, before and after. They were all impressed with my bravery at cutting off most of my hair as well as the finished product.
Personally I think I'm about the cutest thing in town tonight. ;D
I capped off my day spending the money I saved on my haircut (I went out prepared to spend $80+) at Old Navy and Lane Bryant.
So, life's not perfect. But I feel like I changed things up a bit and gained a little bit of self-confidence and -esteem in the process.
Of course, it remains to be seen what it looks like after a wash, air dry and absence of a straightener. I'll keep you posted.
