We ventured out last night to see Cameron's Avatar. I honestly wasn't expecting too much. I heard the plot was tired, but that it was OMG PRETTY, so since we were seeing it in 3D IMAX I was expecting a pretty visual distraction and not much else.
Holy CRAP did I underestimate this film. There were several audible 'Whoa!"s and I even shed a tear or two. The whole world is SO PRETTY and so beautifully imagined and portrayed. The Na'vi are flawless -- no hint of an uncanny valley whatsoever. The acting is thoughtful and straight from the heart. The plot, yes, it's just like Dances with Wolves or the Last Samurai but you know what? Those were GOOD MOVIES. Just because the plot is similar doesn't mean this can't be a good movie too. And it was. Oh WAS it.
I think we're planning to go back again next week and see it again in the 3D IMAX.
Don't listen to the naysayers and the whiners on this one -- they don't know what they're missing here. The movie promised pretty and it delivers on that 100% and then some. But I also found it DID have an emotional impact as well, even if it's nothing new.
As I twittered last night upon leaving the theater, breathless and high on life, "BRB -- Moving to Pandora."
