I've had moments like this. Out on a day-hike, testing new backpacking gear (I always test gear many times before going on a through-wilderness trek...) suddenly the earth grabs me and will not let go. A camp is made, shelter erected, food warmed, water hauled, and then the sparkling light from the brilliant star-lit sky is a glowing affirmation: this is right. This is where I belong..

Not something I've been able to do since aquiring that disease that's been slowing me down. But, I've high hopes for next summer. If not an actua adventure, at least a few overnights to remind myself of how gorgeous the earth is, with only a sliver of a moon and the stars to give light.

Glad you know something of that :) Delightful, isn't it?

it was definitely transcendent under the wheeling stars. i think the core reason i go out in nature is to be awed. music and art can certainly do it, but in nature i feel awe and this strange combination of significance/insignificance.

as far as testing gear...we need a bigger flask and a new hatchet! ;)
