Chapter 6:

When Jaejoong opened his eyes, the first person he saw was Jin. “You’re finally awake.”

In response, Jaejoong only groaned. “Why is this bed so uncomfortable?”

Jin took a deep breath. “You fell from a tree, were unconscious for almost an hour, and almost broke your bones and all you could complain about is the bed being uncomfortable?” The two of them were at the school’s clinic, and Jaejoong was lying on the hospital bed. The school nurse had already left for lunch after seeing to it that her patient was fine.

“But it is!” Jaejoong said as he tried to sit up. Jin helped him. “My back hurts.”

“You’re lucky it’s the only thing that hurts.” Jin motioned to Jaejoong’s arms and legs, which had a few scrapes and bruises that were already patched up. “It’s a good thing you didn’t break anything.”

“Really?” Jaejoong moved on to the side of the bed, swinging his legs. He stretched his arms up and grimaced. “My muscles are sore.”

“You climbed a tree. It’s understandable.” Jin replied. He had arrived on the school grounds just in time to see Jaejoong climbing said tree. Thankfully, playing soccer had increased Jin’s speed and agility that led him to reach the tree in time to catch Jae from falling.  Jae had felt like a dead weight against Jin, having lost consciousness before even hitting the ground. The both of them then stumbled to the ground, the grass cushioning their fall, and Jaejoong on top of Jin. “Just be more careful, okay?”

Jaejoong looked around his surroundings, the white in the walls, the smell of antiseptic and alcohol filling the air, and the presence of medical equipments, giving him an inkling that he must be in the school clinic. “Where are the twins?”

“Changmin picked them up.” Jin said. When it appeared that he couldn’t leave Jaejoong alone, Jin had called Changmin. The high school senior spent his lunch break riding his bicycle to St. Catherine Elementary School which was a fifteen-minute trek away from his own school, and drove the twins home. “He took the car so we’ll have to commute.”

Jaejoong grimaced. “He’s probably annoyed with me more now.”

Jin doubted it. The look on Changmin’s face when he came in the clinic to get the car keys from Jin and saw the scrapes and bruises on an unconscious Jaejoong was enough for Changmin to know that the twins had gone a bit too far this time. “He understood the situation. It wasn’t your fault.”

Jin and Changmin were aware of the pranks the twins pull on each of their nannies. The both of them had been tolerant of it, knowing that it was the twins’ way of testing the nannies to see if they would stay or leave. Those who left went on to prove that they didn’t really want to take care of the twins but were just in it for the money (while some stuck around long enough only to flirt and see if they had a chance with Yunho). Unfortunately, Jaejoong was the only one stupid enough to actually climb a tree - the other nannies didn’t even bother getting whatever it was the twins stuck on said tree.

Jaejoong cocked his head to the side. “Are we expected to get back to the Jungs’ as soon as possible?”

Changmin probably went back to school for his afternoon classes after driving the twins home. With Sungmin’s help, the two servants could probably look after the twins for a while. Besides, the gardener Kangin was also around if anything happened. Yunho won’t be coming home until evening. “What are you planning?” Jin asked.

“I was thinking of visiting Seoul National University.”

“Why do I always end up following you?” Jin grumbled as he paid the fare and followed Jaejoong out of the cab. The two of them were standing in the entrance of Seoul National University.

But Jaejoong wasn’t even listening to him. The former had walked ahead of him to the entrance, flashing a bright smile at the security guard who had stopped him for some identification. From the way he was acting, Jaejoong didn’t look like someone who had just fallen from a tree a few hours ago - except from that one complaint that his muscles were sore, Jaejoong did not seem to be experiencing any discomfort at all.

Jin had to wonder if Jaejoong was really fine or if he was just pretending to be in front of him. It wouldn’t be the first time. As the Crown Prince, it had been ingrained in Jaejoong that he must not show his weakness to the public. If he was sad, he should still smile. If he was feeling hurt, he should still act like nothing was wrong.

After getting their visitors’ passes from the guard, Jaejoong and Jin finally entered the campus. Jaejoong took in his surroundings, not paying any attention to the students who were heading to their classes, their chatter and laughter filling the air. The campus was not much different from the university Jaejoong came from, and it made him feel a bit guilty about all the classes he was skipping.

“Where do you plan to go, Your Royal Highness?” Jin drawled from behind him. Jaejoong glared. It was one thing to be addressed by the public but another to be called by title by people he considered friends, even if they were joking.

“The Office of the Registrar would have access to school records, wouldn’t they?” Jaejoong pushed forward, blending in with the throng of students.

“Are you doing this so you’ll have a reason to quit being the twins’ nanny?” Jin hurried after him. “I told you Yunho could help you. You just have to get him to like you. And I mean that in a friends-way, of course. Because it’s not like you’re ever going to be his type and surely, he can’t be your type. He’s too uptight, I mean I like him as a boss, but he’s so serious and…”

Jaejoong pointedly ignored Jin’s ramble as he tapped the back of one of the students who was about to go past him. When the student turned, Jaejoong smiled brightly. “Hi, do you know where the Office of the Registrar is?”

Blinded by the dazzling being in front of him (because that was how Jaejoong looked like, huge doe eyes blinking at him, with a huge smile adorning the angelic face, the sun shining from behind), the student could only point to the building that stood in front of them. Jaejoong bowed before turning abruptly and walking to said direction, with Jin rambling right after him.

“Really, Jaejoong, it wouldn’t be good for you to act irrationally just because the twins are being brats. I admit they went too far in making you climb a tree and you’ve never even climbed one before, but it’s not like you couldn’t have asked someone else to climb for you or you could have even said no, because you’re older than them and it’s not like the twins don’t listen to their elders…”

Jaejoong rolled his eyes. “Your apartment would be safe from me, Jin. I’m not planning on quitting so I’ll be staying with the Jungs for a while. I’m not that petty. I just don’t want to trouble the Jungs any more than I will have to and it really wouldn’t be fair for Yunho-san to be involved in matters that has nothing to do with him.” It wasn’t that Jaejoong wouldn’t need help later on, and he would be lying if that hadn’t been the reason he agreed to be the twins’ nanny. But looking back, maybe it wasn’t such a good idea to rely so much on a person he didn’t know anything about. Besides, dragging a person into something that would probably turn out messy and complicated just wouldn’t go well in his conscience. It was about time Jaejoong actually did something for himself without relying on others.

“Well, that’s very grown up of you,” Jin told him admirably.

Jaejoong smacked him in reply.

It was dusk by the time the two of them got home. After leaving Seoul National University, Jaejoong decided that it was time for sight-seeing. He’s had enough of keeping it low just because the ‘Crown Prince of Japan missing’ is still news. It was Jin who showed him around the city.

The house was quiet. Too quiet. Jaejoong held a hand up. Jin who had just come in from the door, slowly closed it, careful not to make any sound.

There was no one around. Jaejoong’s eyes looked everywhere, but he cannot find anyone. It was like no one was home. Knowing better, Jaejoong cautiously took one step forward, eyes darting to make sure it was safe.

Another step and he felt something wet on his face. Jaejoong touched his cheek then tentatively sniffed his hand. Relieved to know it was only water, Jaejoong felt his jeans getting wet. Giggles were heard before it was stifled. Jaejoong turned around suspiciously.

Jin just stared at him in amusement, completely dry. Jaejoong keeps getting wetter by the second, his white shirt starting to cling on his body and his jeans becoming heavier. Jin just pointed to his left. Taking a deep breath, Jaejoong looked at the side.

Tae Jin and Soo Jin’s heads were peeking out from the side of the sofa, along with their hands. Both were holding water guns. They weren’t even subtle about it now. The water guns squirted, shooting from both left and right directions, always landing straight at Jaejoong.

Jaejoong had to admit they had good aim. His shooting instructor would have been so proud of the two. Maybe he should ask the twins if they could teach him later on?

“Well don’t just stand there,” a voice boomed out from above. Jaejoong and Jin both looked up. Changmin was standing at the staircase and threw something at Jaejoong, who caught it by reflex.

It was another water gun. Jaejoong stared at Changmin in disbelief. The latter huffed. “There won’t be a next time.”

It’s a weird way to apologize. But he supposed he could live with it. Grinning, Jaejoong turned back to the twins, his own water gun pointing at their direction. “Let’s see you win one over me.”

He squirted the water gun.

Instead of ducking for cover, the twins emerged out from the sofa, and a full game was on. Jin walked to Changmin who was still at the staircase, and both watched the commotion below them. The three of them were running around with Jaejoong shooting randomly at the twins, while the twins retaliated.

“Hero-ssi looks fine.” Changmin remarked. “We shouldn’t have worried too much.”

Jin shrugged. “He’s stronger than he looks.”

It was futile to win two against one. The twins had surrounded him from both sides, one shooting at his left and the other at his right. They were laughing as Jaejoong took turns shooting at them both.

Then the twins rushed to Jaejoong’s front, both aiming at his face. Jaejoong closed his eyes and also started shooting in front. “You’re so going to get it.” He continued to shoot until there was no more water left in the gun.

It was only then that he realized that the twins had already stopped shooting at him. There was a cough.

Jaejoong slowly opened his eyes.

Jung Yunho was standing in front of him with his small face and suit completely drenched.

“Here.” Jaejoong handed Yunho the towel. The latter took it, wiping at his face. “Changmin have already asked Rini to prepare your bath. Your clothes are already at the bed.”

“Thank you.”

Jaejoong sighed. “I guess I’ll have to apologize.”

Yunho paused from wiping his face. He stared at Jaejoong. “You guess?”

“It’s not my fault you went in just as I was shooting at the twins.”

“Oh, so it’s mine?” Yunho asked in amusement.

“You could have said something to warn me so I’d stop before I completely drenched you.” Jaejoong glared at him accusingly. “You just stood there.”

Yunho had to give him that one. “You were having so much fun, who was I to spoil it?” But really, the last thing he had expected when he came home was to be shot.

By a water gun, no less.

He wasn’t going to reprimand the nanny for it though. The looks on the twins’ faces when Jaejoong found out he had been aiming at Yunho - it was something the latter had never seen on them before. For once, his nephew and niece actually looked so joyful, like they didn’t have a care in the world. They were enjoying themselves.

Jaejoong pouted. “You could have joined in, then.”

“There was no more water guns.” Yunho looked at him. “I heard you fell from a tree.”

“I did.”

Yunho checked him for bruises. “Are you hurt anywhere?”

“Nothing I can’t handle.” Jaejoong waved his hand dismissively. “But you should really pay attention to your nephew and niece more.”

“Excuse me?”

Jaejoong crossed his arms over his chest. “Don’t you know that one of the reasons the twins continue to play pranks on their nannies is because maybe they don’t want one? That it’s you they want to take care of them and to spend time with?”

“I spend time with them.” Yunho’s eyes narrowed. “Be careful who you’re talking to, Hero-ssi.”

Jaejoong ignored the warning. “You don’t spend enough time with them. You work all the time. As far as I know, you’re the twins’ only family. They might have gotten used to being around with the rest of your household staff and actually consider Changmin-ssi as an older brother, but you have to admit that they wouldn’t be able to replace their Uncle Yunho.”

“I’m taking care of them the best way I can and I’m working so I can give them what they want. Your only job is to be there whenever I’m not around.”

“Which is most of the time!”

“You’ve only been here for two days!”

“You’ve worked for that two days!” Jaejoong huffed. “No nanny lasts not because the twins are a handful. I bet they’re quite nice once you really get to know them, actually, but no nanny got the chance to because the twins wouldn’t allow it. Maybe a part of it is cautiousness that the nanny would leave, but I think it’s mainly because they just want you, not some nanny, to care for them. I mean, how much effort have you made to actually spend time with them? I bet it was always the twins who found a way to spend time with you.” He knew how that felt like - having a mother to share with the rest of the Japanese people - it’s not difficult to become selfish and want some attention for himself.

Before Yunho could say anything else, Jaejoong thought it best to leave Yunho’s room, closing the door behind him. And it was only then that he realized what he had done.

“Did I just get myself fired?”

A/N: I'm sorry this took so long. ^^" I'm having writer's block with this fic for months, so I'm just relieved I got to finish this chapter. Updates would definitely be slow (because school has basically decided to take over my life), but I do have plans of finishing this fic, so yeah. ^^
