Thanks so much, man! So glad you caught up with the show. S3 was A-MAH-ZING.
I really love how for the first two verses you paired a set of families that we normally wouldn't think to make an association between. Like for the Baratheon/Targaryen verse: it becomes a story of two men who end up being usurped during their own bid for power by these women with magical strengths. (I also, personally, really liked that you used Viserys as a character focus, just because post S1 everyone has more or less forgotten him, it seems!) And then with the Lannisters and Greyjoys, it becomes about effed-up parent-child and sibling relationships.
Yay! The Stannis/Daenerys/Melisandre comparison I think is entwined in the text. Mels believes Stannis to be this hero reborn with his "flaming sword. " She' basically making him fit a certain prophecy, but probably the prophecy refers to Dany with the dragons being her flaming sword. But the parallel goes much deeper than that. The kinslaying/fratricide that is so built into both Dany and Stannis' stories was really important to include. I think one of my fav parts of this entire vid is the "it's fun to lose/and to pretend" lyric with Stannis post-Blackwater and Viserys looking longingly at the Dragon eggs. I MISS THAT CRAZY DUDE! And then of course there's Lannister/Greyjoy. That is definitely an uncommon pairing, but there is a very important parallel. The moment my friend pointed out to me how Theon and Cersei have the same inferiority complex, it changed my entire outlook on Theon!
It seemed like the first two verses were slightly more streamlined in their narrative focus, whereas the third was disjointed specifically because the whole deal with the Starks by this point has become how they are scattered to the winds. The very end of this section in particular just seemed to have this awful build showing how they just kept getting heaped with misfortune - for some reason every time I rewatch the shot that stands out is that quick cut of the Hound in-between all this violence and blood, on the ground, laughing at them.
I like this interpretation! There are more Starks so there was more ground to cover, but I felt it was particularly necessary to show the Starks be brought to their knees in all the various ways in which they were. Glad the bit with the Hound stood out for you. Arya didn't get "entertained" the way she wanted to. ;)
I love in general how you still worked in shots of some of the more important players that didn't belong to any of the major families, such as Varys, Baelish and Margaery.
Thanks so much! As I mentioned in some other comments, the very last bit was a summation of all the players in the game, ranging from most visible and least dangerous, to the least visible and most dangerous. So first the kings, then the queens, and finally the creepers in the shadows. Littlefinger being most dangerous of all!
The intense close-up of Cersei and Jaime's faces in the tower, and the shot of Bran being shoved out, in particular, I thought had this dramatic punch that felt incredibly intense, even though that was from the very first episode!
Haha! Thank you! A bit of new cropping here and there as well as selective clips can go a long way! ;D
