Hitchhiker

I had an interesting hitchhiker this morning while letting my dogs out. A butterfly nearly flew into my face; he fluttered in front of my face for a few seconds, and then landed right on my shoulder. He hardly even budged when I moved some of my hair - a few dreads, that is - from off my shoulder; neither did he have any reaction to my coughing a few times. I walked over to the pond, around the pond, stopped to say good morning to the ducks and see how they were doing; walked over to the other pond - at this point I was all the way on the other side of the apartment complex from where our apartment is - said good morning to the ducks over there; and eventually made my way back to our building. The whole time he just sat quite comfortably on my shoulder. I tried to coax him off and onto a bush, but he stubbornly refused at first. I finally convinced him, but the particular leaf he was trying to get onto was wet and slippery, so I had to give him a bit of a push up from behind.

He seemed to clearly have decided right away that I was friendly, i.e., not a threat, not even with my giant arm and hand coming near him to move and keep my hair out of the way a few times, not even with the sound / vibrations from my coughing and raising my voice to call to my dogs a few times. Makes me wonder in what way he sensed my friendliness. I mean, since I'm not familiar with all of the sense modalities butterflies possess and all of their nuances.

But it was a nice way to start the morning. :D
