bye bye DLP TV

Heyos, so last night I was on my computer and there was a rather loud pop sound from the other room. Go and check out and turns out it came from the TV, not a good sign. Ok power it down and hope after 30 minutes its ok. Well it cycles and cycles and no luck. So I pull open the bulb compartment to take a look as it was a DLP, and sure enough the bulb is well gone. Great, so as this has happened to it once before and I know the bulbs are not cheap started looking around online. Best I could find as replacement would be at least $100 and that was a knock where given the reviews there was bout a 50-50 chance it would last or die within 2 weeks. Not a good feeling ratio, so I looked to the actual replacement and that was going to run least $150 from Toshiba.

As this was rather late into the evening Thesius and I started talking on what we should do. We have had the TV for a good 5+ years and it has lived a good life. After browsing online and hitting several retailers we ended up at Best Buy looking at a couple brands. Sure enough we didn't get that as they did have an open box item and we got an awesome deal where we got a slightly bigger TV then what we previously had and barely went over our budget.

Getting home it was then trying to figure out how to get rid of the old TV, a real problem given that it was a 46" DLP, and due to the bulb having high dosage of mercury its a hazardous item. We figured we would try putting the TV outside with a note saying free. Less then an hour late someone saw it and picked it up. Much cheering was had and so it was far easier then we had thought.

So its a happy ending and Thesius and I basically celebrated our anniversary a week earlier with a big present for ourselves. We thought a lil guilty for it until we watched Tron Legacy on blue-ray on it and well...guilt is gone. :-)
