She had been wondering why her brother summoned her. It seemed very much a move out of the blue. But in any case, Rukia made her way to the Sixth Division quarters. Renji greeted her along the way and led her towards the room where Byakuya was waiting. The two shared an idle conversation before they had entered the quarters where the captain was residing.
“Enter,” came a familiar voice.
Renji gave her a small nod before opening the door for her. As she stepped inside, the door closed behind her. And there, in the small courtyard was the back of a man with black hair. Rukia approached quietly and carefully. Byakuya stood in the green grass area while the young girl stood in the walkway surrounding it. The male always seemed hard to approach.
“Rukia.”
“Y-yes! Nii-sama?” She didn’t expect him to speak so suddenly.
“Join me here.” A slight head turn in her direction.
“All right.”
She moved into the garden of sorts. Off to the left was a small rock pond and surrounded by bamboo shoots. Sometimes, as stoic as Byakuya came off, it was hardly imaginable that he had defined aesthetic tastes. She stood next to him, looking up. But when he said nothing, she looked away. The older Kuchiki did call her here, so why was he not saying anything. The silence was slightly setting her on edge.
“Do you ever-”
“What?!” The suddenness of his words took her off guard. Rukia instantly clasped her hands over her mouth as she realized her mistake. Moments after, she apologized.
Great, way to make things more awkward than they already was, Rukia. In any case, Byakuya started again.
“Do you ever think back on your past?”
That question wasn’t one Rukia was expecting from her brother-in-law. She took a moment to think.
“Sometimes, yes.”
“I see, so even you…”
She half expected him to finish that line, but knew he wouldn’t. She looked up at him.
“Is there something bothering you, nii-sama?”
“Perhaps I was reminiscing on my past when it comes to you…” Rukia would take that was a ‘yes, something is bothering me.’
“When I first adopted you into the household, I was distant and not was considerate enough to help you adjust to the new environment. I apologize for my actions.”
“No, no. Nii-sama, there’s no need for you to apologize. I-was happy to be adopted into this household.”
“Even though I took you away from your best friend?”
“Well… that is…”
In taking her away from the academy, she was separated from Renji. But even back then, she had wished Renji had stopped her. Perhaps they both saw it as a step up from their rugged lives.
“You were abandoned by your sister until you found Renji. You lost him when I took you in. And even in being next you, I had abandoned you as well.”
“Nii-sama…”
“I will not promise I can make up for lost time, my actions were inexcusable. But I would like to become a pillar of support.”
She could see the seriousness in his eyes. She could see the sincerity too. This might have been a side locked away from her, or just one she failed to noticed.
“You are… already a pillar of support for me.”
If Rukia could catch it, for a split second, an expression of shock appeared on his face. But soon after, his neutral face returned.
“I see…”
“So, thank you, nii-sama. I am-in your hands.” The young girl bowed.
“Stand.”
“What?”
She wasn’t expecting an order from him. As she raised her body to stand up right, shock now settled on her face. Byakuya had bowed to her instead. She was speechless. She couldn’t even tell him to stand back up (who was she to give an command?).
“Byakuya nii-sama…”
He stood erect at the mention of his name. The tall male placed a comforting hand on her head and all she could do was smile. All this time he had watched her grow. Perhaps he was feeling a bit nostalgic about the bond between them. There would be no other reason to explain what transpired.
