Author's Note: Pairing from
sortinghat_rp now currently played on our own terms. Idea and parts of the thread taken from
this entry using the fic as an alternate ending. Christmas present for
technicallysane who is the Gabriel to my Kallen. Title of the fic matches with Backstreet Boys's song of More Than That which ironically fits these two. Listen to the song
here prior to or while reading the fic. See the footnotes to understand and know how these lyrics matches up.
Warnings: Broken Gabriel personality because how else will he actually show emotions.
Take that scene and make it reality.
“You don’t want me to go, do you?”
Why did she have to ask that? Wasn’t it obvious that he didn’t want her to leave? Her brother went off to be an Auror and look where he ended up. Dead. What if she met the same fate? And there was a good chance that he wouldn’t be there to save her if someone ill-fated came knocking on her door. He was bound to this place and couldn’t leave. He couldn’t follow her. That’s why he didn’t want her to leave. But she knew that right? She just had to…
Instead of answering the woman’s question, he just stood there, not saying anything. How was she supposed to know what he refused to tell him?
“A simple shake of the head will do even if you don’t want to say it.”
Kallen knew. Kallen knew that Gabriel didn’t want her to leave. But she wanted some sort of reaffirmation. After all, their conversation before hand didn’t go in a good direction and she was sure the ghost was upset with her. But when she had said that it was time to go, she watched as the male’s face fell. It was heartbreaking. Nothing in her vocabulary could describe the expression on his face.
It took some time and it probably felt longer than the actual time had elapsed, but Gabriel nodded his head. He didn’t want her to leave and now, she knew it for sure.
The girl he watched over, pseudo-raised when her brother faded out of her life. She didn’t know of all the things he had done, but after the fact, she knew Gabriel was always there, watching out for her. And some of the plot whole scenarios in her life suddenly made sense. Like the time she was sure she wrote down an answer on a homework worksheet, she blinked, and suddenly it was gone. During that time, she wasn’t really sure how it disappeared because she wasn’t paying attention (ironically each time, she had turned away or had been day dreaming). With Gabriel’s confession of knowing of her and Naoto, her brother, everything fell into place like a finding lost puzzle pieces that sneaked their way under a couch.
Kallen took a step forward and placed her arms around Gabriel. They weren’t really sure how it happened, but when she hugged him, something was… not right. Gabriel, he was warm. Usually he was cold, and that’s not talking about his ‘you’re pressing the issue too hard’ personality shift.
Cerulean eyes opened wide in shock, but held onto him tighter. In turn, golden eyes searched in the distance for some sort of answer. How was this even… possible? He was dead, afraid to pass on, and was now a ghost. There was no way he could be… human again. How could he feel her body against him, holding him? No, he wasn’t going to let this opportunity pass. Gabriel’s hand threaded itself in a sea of auburn hair while his free arm wrapped around her waist, pulling Kallen closer. He held onto her to indulge in the moment, as if he blinked she would be gone or he wouldn’t be able to feel her.
“You asked me what I would do if you left to become an Auror… If I would stop you, if I would tell you not to go… I’m telling you right now Kallen, don’t leave.”
He rested his chin on top of her head, closing his eyes. This was another weak moment he wasn’t supposed to have; that she wasn’t supposed to see.
“Stay…”
Her eyes slammed shut, trying her best to hold back the tears she didn’t want to release. The small hands on Gabriel’s back gripped the fabric of his jacket tighter. Ironically, this was a display Gabriel was never meant to see; except, he had seen this type of behavior before from Kallen. He was there when the young girl lost her brother. He saw her as she cried every night, not being able to cope with her loss. But this was a risk he wasn’t willing to take. Not with her. Kallen had lost Naoto and Gabriel didn’t want to lose Kallen.
He removed his head from on top of hers and looked down. He had never been this close to her. But it was nice to feel the warmth, her soul, her existence resonating from her. The usually headstrong girl seemed so fragile in his arms right now. Gabriel’s hand moved from her hair to the side of her face. The male could never put into words just how long he desired to touch her. Of course, when she was younger, he placed a hand on her head and told her that she was going to be okay. But she knew nothing of that.
“Don’t leave me.”
Gold stared back at blue before the distance closed and Gabriel pressed his lips against Kallen’s. They were soft, delicate, innocent…
Perfect.
Gabriel, for a moment, almost thought he had been too forward. He cared about Kallen, but doing something this, he was afraid to push her away. The male pulled away, but she moved forward in turn, not letting their contact go null. Because of that, he held her as close as he could.
Lips moved against one another. He sighed and a small noise of content sounded from the back of her throat. Kallen’s hands untangled themselves from his back and cupped Gabriel’s face. His hands placed themselves on top of hers and slipped them away from his face. Gabriel finally broke the kiss.
“We shouldn’t do this.”
Her eyes opened, staring at Gabriel.
“Will you deny yourself happiness again?”
His silence meant ‘yes’ to her.
“I want you be selfish. You deserve to be after so long. I refuse to abandon you and I won’t. You are allowed to be cared for, to be noticed. If I’m not standing here right now in front of you, then what else am I supposed to do? Me… you… don’t deny this. You know I will always care for you. So don’t you dare deny my feelings when you know they are true, honest, and solely for you.”
“Kallen, I can’t-”
“No, you can. The point is that you ‘won’t’.”
“That’s not-”
“I love you, Gabriel.”
“Wh-”
He instantly took a good number of steps away from her. No, he couldn’t love him. No one loved him, not since Kali, not since Loki, not since Lucifer. And even back then, he denied it. But when it came to the mother of his son, he didn’t even deserve her harsh kindness back then. They only wanted the best for him.
Damn how their personalities overlapped.
“Kallen, if I do this… there is no stopping this. You’ll have to accept every single part of me, broken or not. You’d be taking a high stakes, all or nothing, risk here.”
“What’s your point?”
“Wh-That is the point-”
“Then I accept.”
“This isn’t something you can just… accept at the drop of a hat here Kallen.”
“Then fine, I’ll leave.”
Fluidly, she turned around and began to walk. She was unable to get too far before Gabriel reached out and grabbed her wrist. He did it without thinking; the plague of his older brother leaving him ran through his mind. The girl turned around and placed a hand on top of Gabriel’s.
“I’ll ask you one last time, Gabriel. What is it that you want me to say? What is it that you want me to do?”
The grip around her wrist tightened as Gabriel froze in place, a deer caught in the headlights of Kallen’s face.
“I-”
If he wasn’t honest with her, she would just walk away right? This was his one opportunity to lay it all out. To be honest.
To be selfish like she asked told him to.
His voice was barely audible, but they reached Kallen’s ears perfectly fine. His eyes focused on the ground which held his attention.
“Tell me that you… need me. That you won’t leave… that…. you love me. Say all of those things, and mean it. And stay, for the sake of my sanity, please stay.”
She walked up to Gabriel, lifting his head up to look at her.
“Gabriel Milton. I do not know your entire past, but even though you are related to Michael and Lucifer who used students for their own personal war, I will not ever judge you for that. I know you for you, and because of that, I will not abandon you. I will not make you choose.
You are someone who I have always needed. You were there when I didn’t know you existed. You are important and you are not someone I can just write out of my life. I need you by my side just as you always have been. But this time it’s different. I know you’re here. You don’t have to hide from me anymore.
Everything about you, big or small, shattered or whole, I will love. In fact, I already do. I love you Gabriel, and nothing will ever change that. Not you, not your past, not even Thobari. I realized it late, but I know now, I have always loved you.”
“Kallen…”
“Gabriel, don’t you get it? I want you to be happy. I am only hoping that you can find happiness in me.”
He stood there in silence. Why was she so much like Kali? Why was she always right? He stood forward and leaned down to rest his head into the nook of her neck. Kallen’s arms went around him softly.
“I know I’ve always been that little girl you’ve looked after. But I’m all grown up now. You’ve always been there for me. Let me be there for you.”
There was a long pause before either of them spoke. Gabriel decided to speak up first.
“All right.”
“No more fighting?”
“No more fighting. I give in… There’s no besting you, kiddo. You win.”
Kallen smiled before leaning up and kissing Gabriel. She immediately knew she wasn’t going anywhere because he quickly captured her in his arms, pulling her in close. Arms looped around the backside of the male’s neck, stating that she wasn’t letting go. She kissed him back with the force she was met with by him. It didn’t take long for moving lips against lips turning into fighting a battle with their tongues. A hand moved up the back of Gabriel’s neck and into his hair. Just a simple touch by her felt so damn good. It probably had something to do with the fact that well, he hadn’t any sort of physical touch in over a hundred years. But it was more than that. This wasn’t some girl he would think of, this was Kallen.
Light feather trails of his touch lingered on her waist and her hips. She sighed as she pulled away from the kiss to breathe for a moment. Being with him, it was almost as if she forgot how to. Gabriel placed a light kiss on her forehead.
“Come on.”
He grabbed her wrist and started walking. The touch was soft but the sudden movement confused her.
“Where are we going?”
“I want to show you something.”
Two pairs of feet made their way to the lake. Kallen moved forward and sat down at its edge, her hand dipping into the water freely. Gabriel didn’t follow her. It was as if his feet froze in place, unable to walk upon the same ground once more.
“This… is where it happened… this is where my brother killed me.”
Kallen turned around and looked up at Gabriel. She didn’t want another painful situation for him, so why bring her here? Just what was the point? She wanted him to let go of all of this and break free from the chains, but…
“I’m bound to this place. No matter how many times I don’t want to remember it, my feet always travel here. If you really want to be a part of this, then this is something important I needed to share with you.”
Now it made sense.
The woman reached up towards Gabriel, holding out her hand to him. She wasn’t Lucifer, he knew that. He hesitated for a moment before taking her hand in his. Kallen pulled him down to sit next to her.
“Thank you.”
Because he didn’t have to share with this her. Because he didn’t have to bring up another painful memory.
A long silence occurred before her turned in her direction and pushed her lightly onto the grass. Gabriel leaned over her.
“You… Do you honestly think you can set me free from all this?”
A hand went up to cradle his face.
“No. And that’s only because I can’t do it alone. I can help, but you’re the only one who can truly unlock yourself and be free.”
“Just what’s with you? No one else ever gave a damn about me after I left my family. So why you? What makes you so special?”
“Because…”
Both hands rested on the sides of his face, pulling him down to kiss her.
“I may have been born to love you.”
Golden eyes opened wide before shutting, a smirk appeared on his face.
“You didn’t cast some magic on me did you because I’m actually starting to believe in what you’re saying.”
“Nope, not at all.”
He moved to be on all fours, hovering over and trapping her under him. All she did was smile before he kissed her. A hand roamed all over her body which caused her to arch into his touch. Lips moved to the side of her neck as she sighed and moan in content. Kallen whispered out his name in a way that sent a jolt through his body. He only said her name once before undressing her and his clothes soon followed.
The lake was public enough, but had its own private sections. And there was just one hidden spot that Gabriel had always made his own when he was younger. It wasn’t until he returned to that spot that Lucifer found and killed him. But this time it was different. He wasn’t thinking about the past and he wasn’t thinking about his older brother. All thoughts focused in the girl below him as she cried out incoherent noises from the moment he entered her until all was said and done. He made sure enough that he was gentle because it was her first time, but damn it had been a long time since Gabriel last indulged himself.
He lay next to her, arm wrapped around her waist, Kallen’s head resting on his chest.
“You are something else. And I don’t mean the great sex you just offered on your first time.”
Kallen started to get up, about to say something about what he said, but he quickly put a hand on her head, forcing her back down.
“Just me a moment to explain, will ya? What I mean is that I feel different around you now. Lighter even… Just this whole confession thing… for once in my afterlife I feel content, at peace.”
“I can only hope it will continue to be this way.”
“There’s not much I can say or do, but I will promise you this. I will learn and come to love you Kallen. I really don’t remember what it was like to feel love, accepted. Cause of that, I lost my sense of caring for other people. You just have to wait.”
“I’ll wait, no matter how long it takes, understand? Just know that my love for you will not falter.”
“Got it memorized kiddo.”
Kallen sat up and Gabriel’s hand slipped from her head. She leaned down to kiss him on the lips lightly before speaking once more.
“It’s Kallen.”
I can see that you've been crying
You can't hide it with a lie
What's the use in you denying
That what you have is wrong
Kallen can easily see how much Gabriel has been hurting. And all it took was a conversation and for him to break down and tell her about his past with his family. She doesn't think it's right for him to revel in self-hatred and denial of happiness.
I heard him promise you forever
But forevers come and gone
Baby he would say whatever
It takes to keep you blind
To the truth between the lines
Okay, so Kallen didn't EXACTLY hear Lucifer promise anything to Gabriel as far as "always being there" for him among other things. But what brother that promises to be there and protect his little brother kills them instead. Kallen believes while there might have been some point that Lucifer loved his little brother, there was a string of lies told to him. And because siblings look up to older brothers or sisters, Gabriel would believe him, truth or not. She knows it would be the same if her brother did the same to her.
Oh I will love you more than that
I won't say the words, then take them back
Don't give loneliness a chance
Baby listen to me when I say
I will love you more than that
She believes that Gabriel deserves so much more and wishes that while her family isn't picture perfect, she would have traded places with him. But in knowing that she can't, the only thing are the things he should have been given: care, attention, and more importantly, love. Kallen swore that she would never abandon Gabriel, which she knows is his biggest fear (outside of being loved). But anything that Kallen says that remotely talks about her caring for him, Gabriel will deny it, say she's lying, and doesn't deserve it. She knows he does and wishes he could understand that. (Maybe she was born to love him? Who knows.)
Baby you deserve much better
What's the use in holding on
Don't you see it's now or never
Cause I just can't be friends
Baby knowing in the end
Kallen has always felt that Gabriel was someone she had always loved... even though he never showed himself to her until her adult years. Of course, the concept sounds silly. But in finding out that Gabriel had always been there for her since she was younger, there was something more there. Something different that being 'in love' with Thobari, something deeper. Nothing comes from forgetting the past, but Kallen wants him to look towards the future and stop being bound by the chains of his history. He deserves to be loved, cared for, and everything else. She wants to do it, but every time she tries, he doesn't let her and runs away.
That I will love you more than that
I won't say the words, then take them back
Don't give loneliness a chance
Baby listen to me when I say
There's not a day that passes by
I don't wonder why we haven't tried
It's not too late to change your mind
So take my hand, don't say goodbye
A running theme with Gabriel and Kallen is that she tends to hold out her hand to him, even though she knows he's a ghost but can't physically take it. She remembers the times with Naoto when he used to do the same with her. Having someone there to reassure you that they will be there and that things will be okay. She wants him to find happiness and hopefully...find it in her.
I will love you more than that
I won't say the words, then take them back
Oh I will love you more than that
I won't say the words, then take them back
Don't give loneliness a chance
Baby listen to me when I say
I will love you, oh
I will love you more than that
I won't say the words, then take them back
Don't give loneliness a chance
Baby listen to me when I say
I will love you more than that
No matter how broke he is and despite how many people have cast him aside for it, Kallen doesn't plan on going anywhere. She will accept every part of Gabriel, no matter how ugly it might be.
Gabriel listen to her when she says, "I will love you more than that."
