So in case you haven't heard, there has been a proposed rule change in the Department of Health and Human Services that would deny federal funding to health care institutions that refuse to hire nurses and doctors who will not perform abortions. The idea is to give more leeway for health care providers to refuse services based on their "conscience", because obviously your doctor's conscience is more important than your basic right to control your own reproduction. Also, the proposed rule change does not distinguish between abortion and contraception. Hormonal birth control is in a particularly sketchy situation here because it keeps fertilized eggs from implanting, so some extremists consider it abortion. So, if your health care provider refuses to prescribe the pill for you, he's not, you know, not doing his fucking job. He's following his conscience. And if you happen to be in a rural area, or tied to a particular health care provider because of your insurance situation, or otherwise unable to access a less conscientious provider, well, unfortunately, you are fucked.
Luckily, MoveOn and Planned Parenthood have made enough of an issue out of this that it's being reconsidered, and starting today there is a 30 day window to send your input to HHS. So guys: please, please, PLEASE. Send an email to consciencecomment@hhs.gov. Write a few sentences. I don't usually forward or promote things like this because I know everyone has their own causes, but this is so so SO important. Okay. Thanks.
