caution, rant:
so today is my last day of work and tomorrow we're moving into a new volunteer house because the landlord is selling the current one. i will live there for four days before "going home again" to casa tom&marci. our house contains twelve years of other volunteers' crap. instead of spending our last week together doing meaningful, emotional things, my roommates and i have been deciding things like which of the seven spatulas make the cut for the big move. i was annoyed that the volunteer corps support committee here in wilmington left the packing up to us. technically, this is their job, not ours. but then, four of them came by last night to help. they started deciding which furniture isn't going to be moved and put it out on the curb and stacked the rest of it in big piles. i was grabbing my own personal things left and right and hiding them in my room to prevent mistaken purging. after they left we sat around on the floor talking because the four of us wouldn't fit in one armchair.
i realize all of this is nothing compared to the lives of people i've met this year who have absolutely nowhere to go, but i still don't like the feeling of not having a place of my own. i have always, always hated times of transition and this one is especially bizarre. it's also going to be quite a shock to move back in with my parents (for all of us) after five years away. fortunately, i got a new job (yay!) so i know that i can get my own place once i've saved up a little. wish me luck for tomorrow--the moving van hasn't even shown up yet and i'm already testy.
