I decided to make the journey over the hills to East Palo Alto so I could browse for a new sofa or futon at my nearest IKEA. I sped up and down HWY 17 trying to keep up with cars through twists and turns that everyone seems so comfortable making at 70mph. I enjoy seeing the confidence of a driver who can take an old Volvo around a 90 degree turn without touching the breaks. These people have either become one with the road or they’re just fucking crazy, hahaha. Either way, I love it!
I wandered all over IKEA sitting on every couch and futon they had, analyzing why I liked the ones I did and what would be the best fit for my price range. I settled on a nice, simple, cheap, futon with a removable cover I can replace when I feel inspired. Delivery was going to cost me half the price of the futon, so I decided to hold off until I can further evaluate the best way to bring the sucker home.
Right before the warehouse is the gardening section. I thought about getting a plant or two for my patio, and then I saw the palms. It’s been a dream of mine to have a palm tree in my front yard. I decided what better fit for me, than an IKEA majestic palm. I carefully picked out the nicest one I could find. Some had two palms on one pot, but I thought a single one would be most appropriate. I also picked out a thick, clay pot for its new home.
The as-is section is one of my favorites at IKEA. My home is put together with many pieces that are perfect in their uniqueness, and sometimes it’s better to have a $4 rug that’s torn in the corner than to not have one at all. It’s still a beautiful rug, and it feels good getting a deal. It’s dark grey with a thin, lime green stripe down the middle. It looks like a stretch of open road, perfect for my rear patio.
I paid for my things and arrived at my tiny car. It fits a lot of stuff since it’s a hatchback, but tall or long things require some intense Tetris skills to load. I began laughing after loading my bags in, because my majestic palm was about two feet taller than my car. I didn’t want to lay it on its side since the pot was full of dirt and I didn’t want to damage of the leaves. So I opened my sunroof, got the palm in behind my passenger seat, and carefully got the top to poke out of the roof. Anyone who saw me in the garage must have thought I was crazy…laughing my ass off taking photos of a tree sticking out of my car.
I drove home through a ribbon of silver Mercedes and Toyotas speckled with bright red brake lights, occasionally brushing palm leaves away from my face. I set up my palm out front by the fountain and it looks awesome! I’ve always had bad luck with plants, as they always seem to die unusually early while in my care. Seriously, even cactus has died on me and those shits can survive the dessert! The only plant that I’ve managed to keep alive is my IKEA lucky bamboo from several years ago. My cat even knocked a tripod over on that one and broke it, but it’s still going strong. Maybe it’s not bad plant luck, but just that I’ve been getting the wrong plants. I hope to keep my palm with me a good many years.
