Well. A very kind person named marbleglove has just written to tell me that some yoyo named Alexaviera J. Raven's swiped my Highlander story The Good Student, arguably the best-known story I've got online, and available through my webpage for the last ten years. The story's just been posted on fanfiction.net, as Alexaviera's own work. Cute. ( Read more... )

But you know what the amazing thing is? Marbleglove spotted that story within hours of its appearance on fanfiction.net, put two and two together, and wrote to me, cc'ing to this Alexaviera person. The internet moves at the speed of thought. Oh, no, that's wrong: marbleglove moves at the speed of thought, and I'm totally impressed by her.

the internet is indeed an amazing place. the self-policing nature is rather fascinating.

oh. I love that story. I love all your HL stories. What a horrid thing. I reported it as abuse. And left a disgusted review. What a drag. But it made me write you to tell you how much I love your writing!

Jotribe, I love you; I jaunted around ff.net earlier today, looking for a link to the admins, because I didn't know where to report abuse. But you're as impressive as marbleglove, striking like lightning from out of the blue!

Swiping the stories of good writers seems to be an epidemic today. I found out - via a link to a link which I can't back trace - that some jerk is swiping en mass work, posts AND comments from thariris's LJ. The lady died over a year ago and this is just the worst kind of stealing from the deal. He even calls his journal by her title; of course, fandom has caught on and the comments were up to three pages the last I looked. Here's a link to her original journal but I don't remember what he called his, except he also used a very similar title. What's happened, I think, is that big corporations have made copyright a joke by copyrighting everything and anything so that people have totally lost respect for the idea.

Ah - here's the link to the post on the plagiarism of Themaris' journal:

The user has an ISP from Belgrade, Serbia but has now apparently locked down his journal. Gee - I wonder why. People ALWAYS catch the plagiarist. I've never seen it fail so why do people continue to try.

This particular plagiarist was pounced upon by the Stop Plagiarism community, which has a link in the other comments to my post. Hopefully he'll slink away in shame and stay offline, because that takes the cake: reprinting an entire journal as your own? What goes through these peoples' so-called minds???
