I recently saw the trailer for the new Star Trek movie due to come out in May, 2009, and wrote a little peice about it. Here it be at pinkraygun.com. Enjoy!
It's a bit more complicated than that. From what I understand "their people spoke to his people", but they couldn't work out a deal. The one major MAJOR obstacle is that Kirk died in Generations, and finding some way to resurrect him without throwing off the balance of the new story they wanted to tell with the younger characters proved insurmountable.
Now, personally, I think all they needed was two lines.
Kirk: "Remember when Picard thought I died in the Nexus? He sure was surprised when he returned to regular space and found out he'd been talking to an illusion all along."
But I think the new TPTB thought it would take a whole movie to resurrect Kirk and that wasn't the storyline they wanted to go with.
Fans, of course, have come up with some great ways to resurrect Kirk - here's one of my favorites:
At several convention appearances in 2007 Shatner and Nimoy made all kinds of coy, teasing comments to the fans, hinting that just MAYBE Kirk would show up anyway. I truly believed he would, but I don't anymore, because the whole tone changed around the time of the writer's strike. A shame, but if this movie is a success, maybe they can bring him back in the next one.
