Going Bunburying!

Went to see The Importance of Being Earnest tonight at The American Shakespeare Center. It was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! Now, that's not really a huge surprise, as I have yet to see a performance at Blackfriar's that isn't fabulous, and The Importance of Being Earnest is quite possibly my all-time favourite play of all time ever. I'm really very sad that I waited until the end of the run to go see the play, because I'm pretty sure if I'd seen it earlier in the season, I would have gone back to see it several times. And I KNOW I would have made some of my friends go see it, because it's just the sort of awesome you have to share.

However, I recognise that not everyone appreciates 19th century high society satire. While I adore the play, I have heard stories that some people don't really like it. I've never met anyone like that, but I'm sure they exist. And that's totally okay! The world would be really annoying if everyone thought like me, because then I wouldn't have anyone to force to watch my terrible tv shows. But you know what isn't okay? Standing outside the stage doors and proclaiming to God and everyone, in the loudest voice of anyone in the theatre, that it was a stupid play and you hated it. But that is exactly what some random old dude in the very front row of the theatre did, during the second intermission.

And here's the thing. The play was written in 1895. You can read it for free on Project Gutenberg. It's been made into several movies, most of which are available on Netflix. There is no excuse for you to not have some idea what the play is about. And if you didn't want to be spoiled, and you wanted to see it from scratch, then good for you... but unlike the people on the magic talky tv box, the people up on the stage can actually hear you. They have spent weeks making the play perfect (and believe me, it was fucking PERFECT> so the least you could do as an audience member is have some fucking discretion.

I swear, some people just have no decency.
