Tropfest - a promised explanation

Feb 27, 2006 15:35

So yes, here is the explanation to anyone reading this who i SMS spammed yesterday with requests to send the number 2 to an expensive number. As for people who don't read this, I think I'll have a story to tell most people who I see in the next couple of weeks who have mobiles. The credit I ran down mooching yesterday, egad.

But anyway, as for what actually happened.

Yesterday was Tropfest, and I got there at about 2 in order to get a good spot (though Craig had gotten there about two hours earlier), which suceeded quite a bit. At some point in the day they announced that they had some competiton going where they wanted "performers" who could win a trip to new york. I meandered over to the relevant pavilion and found that they wanted people to do a 30 second piece of impro using a bubble related prop. They ran about 20 heats, each of which involved five people. I went last in my heat and all the people before me were somewhat uninspiring. I daresay I was the opposite when i got up and sung an improvised song about a bubble bath factory in disaray that is saved by an ameoba super hero. People were dancing and stuff and I didn't even have any music.

So yes, i won my heat and along the 19 winners of the other heats was sent to a nearby caravan to individually do another improvised scene on camera, this one as a reporter live at tropfest when a giant bubble lands on the red carpet (really not very interesting). I did another song, this one about how the bubble was there to demand that you mention your sponsor as much as possible (every announer called the event "Sony Tropfest" everytime they mentioned it) which in hindsight would have been better spoken but hey. Five of those 20 people were to be picked by judges to have their acts broadcast over the big screen at all the tropfest events around the country and then an SMS poll would be conducted to judge who was funniest, the winner getting the trip to new york.

So yes, when the call came through that I was one of the five I was pretty excited, both because I had a 20% chance of winning a trip to new york and because me being an idiot was going to be broadcast to 90 000 people. I was off being interviewed the first couple of times I was onscreen and missed the voting instruction, but luckily Craig and his Wife Linda were onto it and when i returned to our spot I burned up vast amounts of credit messaging everyone I knew with a mobile who didn't hate me to vote for me.

Buit anyway, in the end I didn't win and torrential rain forced us out of Tropfest and onto sopping wet buses shortly after the halfway point of the films. So yes, Tropfest was fun, consider yourselves explained to.

It's nice to know that my on the spot songs have appeal with folk beyond just my friends.
