Into Thin Air

I met John Krakauer today while climbing at the local climbing gym. It is such a scene it is ridiculous. I was climbing with a friend, who happens to be the E.D. of the American Mountain Guide Association, and as this older gentleman, middle-aged, who looked rather grizzled, walked by she whispered to me, "I am pretty sure that is John Krakauer."

She didn't give me any evidence of this, he looked like a regular climbing gym regular. He had a perma-squink, which gave him a weasely looking face. Betsy introduced herself and asked him if that was who he was, and then we began talking a bit. We talked about his book, Into Thin Air, which was recently made into a movie, and he talked about some of the problems and politics of doing the movie, about hollywood, and about the family, etc.

It was brief and simple, but it felt pretty hard to keep a smirk from taking control of my face as I stood there in front of a rather iconic writer, whose writing has touched me.
