NaNo Day 10

At this point, I just keep saying to myself, over and over again: It's only a rough draft. It's only a rough draft. This is to help me deal with the fact that 2 of my 3 main characters seem to lack any sort of character flaws, one of my secondary characters has just disappeared and I don't know how to get him back, my plot is frankly preposterous, and that even with all these things missing, my story is going to be WAY longer than 50,000 words.

Also, I'm falling into the trap of using magic to work around stuff like that fact that my main characters just happen to jump into a world where everybody speaks English (there's a spell that can manipulate people's brainwaves so that they can understand other languages. However, the building blocks of language have to already exist, so they can't just use a spell to teach their kids how to speak. Same thing applies to reading and writing). Also, they can make fire and light, but not food or water. (Adds drama to the story.) There are other things.

Basically, in this world, which I am calling Alumenia (for now. I can't tell if it's a really dumb name or not.), everything is a property of light and magic is like science. People who use magic have to specialize, because there are so many principles involved in each aspect that it would take a lifetime to learn them all. Therefore, there are people who specialize in prophesy/ fortune telling, manipulation of objects, conjuring, etc. Also, there are two groups of people who pay attention to what I am TENTATIVELY calling the ethereal matrix (What? This whole thing is about expediency! I can work on the names later.). However, because of it's complexity they have to specialize into Macro or Micro Positional Inference.  The Macro people can tell what's going on all over the world, but only in a general way. The Micro people, on the other hand, are limited to a small area around themselves, but they can pretty much tell you everything going on around them.

All this is just to let you know that i am trying to work around stuff, but it's not easy and I feel like I am just making up rules as I go along, to fit  the general arc of the story. Do you think that's okay? Should I try and formulate a more rigid mythology? I just can't tell.

I'm so confused.
