The other day, Michy's on-again-off-again pookie pinned on his second stripe, which is the Naval equivalent of Tech Sergeant. Apparently naval promotions for the enlisted below senior NCO are pretty informal - no board or anything, just a general show up at work one day and be informed you're promoted. Oh, and you need a new uniform. Because ( Read more... )

According my hubster (once an Army drill sergeant), the way you get by in the military without owning an iron is to have everything properly pressed and starched at the cleaners. (That's just based on past conversations: if I'd asked him about this case in particular, I'm sure the response would have included the usual inter-service mockery. *grin*)

(You're in Hawai'i? *sigh* I was born and raised there, but have been in exile on the mainland for the last thirteen-odd years. Not that you really know me from Adam, but if you'd be willing to do a small favor for a fellow fangirl, might I beg you to take an extra flower with you for my sake the next time you're up at Pearl Harbor or Punchbowl? Not being able to visit those shrines anymore is one of the many things I deeply miss...)

Bless you. Seriously.

The WWII vet who was, essentially, an Iroh-like figure in my childhood is buried at Punchbowl. I'd not dream of asking you to go on a wild-goose-search for the precise site, and really, leave a blossom at one of the main memorials, or even on Ernie Pyle's grave off the main memorial drive, and I think he would have approved heartily.

I'm not the fastest writer, so I've taken the liberty of adding you to my fandom filter -- in the absence of more from me to actually read, you're welcome to stop by and mock my whingeing about not actually writing.

(And if it wasn't abundantly clear from my comments elsewhere, I love love love the penguin equations. And your fanart for Loveroftheflame is CLAMP!tastic.)

I'll look into it - I intend to re-visit all the memorial istes before I leave the island.

Eeep, anything for penguins!

If you're THAT bored, I can show you the piece retad is nagging me about -- via email or in my journal, whichever you'd prefer. It's actually a fanfic based on a fanfic, how dreadfully meta is that? So it probably won't make a great deal of sense if you don't read the piece which inspired it first; and it is so far beyond raw that it's just not even funny. But retad and loveroftheflame seem to think it's OK.

(Me, I'm still not quite sure. But if I don't finish it they're gonna poke me with sharp sticks.)

Oh, geeze, it's not ready for anything PUBLIC yet. That's why retad and loveroftheflame are poking me to actually get it polished up enough to set loose in the world -- they've seen the initial coredump via email, and are generally more positive about it than I am. I know what's going to be changed, I just have to finish thinking it out and sit down to do it -- this is shaping up to be quite a bit longer than my original conception of the piece, which is a big part of my kvetching ( ... )
