Chapter Three

That was just a simple question. Yet the answer is pretty complicated now that Matt has to think about it. But one think Matt is sure of, that this guy doesn’t ask about how he would change the USC Hospital, or how he would lead the hospital once he’s elected, that’s going to make him a different leader than the previous leaders. Brian doesn’t want to know about that, he doesn’t want to know the politic inside of the hospital. At least that is what Matt gets by looking at Brian’s hard expression.

Matt actually knows what Brian really wants to know is what Matt can do best for the patients, who come to the hospital for help. And wasn’t that why Matt coming in the first place to look for Brian Haner? Because, somehow, he knows this guy only gives the best treatment for his patients.

But, hey! Can Matt answer Brian with, “Because it’s you. I’m going to have you to work with me, and that will absolutely differentiate me with the former professor”?

Nah, that’s a joke. But really, what’s there that Matt needed to do more? He has been giving all of his life to the hospital, to the patients. He, just like Brian has said previously, doesn’t mind living by himself. He only wants the best for his patients, and that, somehow, hardly ever goes along with the professor’s policies.

And always the professor!

Matt already has some plans to reform the hospital. In addition to that, it’s going to be big, he even readied himself to fight the whole traditions in the University of Southern California Hospital.

However, Brian can see how Matt all tenses up. This guy is sure has something for me, Brian smiles to himself, as he lets his eyes fall to the pile of papers Matt has sent him the other days.

“So, Bachista, was it?” Brian queries after minutes away with nothing but silence.

The sudden question catches Matt off guard, but he soon takes it as a signal that Brian is finally interested at him. Who knows that Brian is actually giving him a chance to convince the former-surgeon to join his team?

“Yes,” Matt answers, he raises his head a little higher, “that’s what I wrote in my letters.” Matt flicks his hazel eyes over the papers, before turning to Brian, “You know about it, don’t you?”

Brian smirks. “It’s a method to reduce the cardiac ventricle* by cutting the heart directly. Which difficulty can be considered as the apex in any surgical procedure of cardiothorac surgery,” Brian says. “That’s making it an unpopular surgery.”

“True. In the USA alone, I only know one doctor who had successfully pulled the Batista. Only one.”

“Heh! I’ve heard about it too. Unfortunately, though, the patient died in the third day after the operation. And that doctor fucking killed himself out of shame.”

“Yeah, that patient’s heart experienced some complications after the surgery. The hospital decided to stabilize the patient first before conducting another operation. But it seemed that the patient couldn’t be stabilized, I don’t know, and the heart just failed at the third day,” Matt pipes up with a shrug at the end.

“So it wasn’t very successful then,” Brian laughs.

Matt joins him. “Yeah, I guess so.” Matt is quiet glad now that the conversation goes smoothly with the little laughs and all, just like the first time they met at Brian’s door. And so, he dares himself to ask, “Don’t you want to attempt the Bachista, Haner? I know what you are capable of. That’s why I come with Bachista in hands. This going to be the greatest challenge of all.”

Brian merely laughs, and then yawns.

Matt brows crease a little at that. And more, when Brian’s answer comes in just a simple, “I’m not interested.”

Matt is shocked, he looks at Brian in disbelief, as Brian adds, “I don’t give a fuck whether you become a professor or not. I gotta take a shower… so go home!” He pulls himself up from his couch and heading for the kitchen.

“Wait!” Matt calls.

But Brian merely waves his hand over his shoulder, doesn’t even bother to turn around. “Have a nice day,” he says.

Matt is not having it. He stands up from his seat and chases Brian to the kitchen. “Wait. We haven’t finished yet! Brian!” Matt yells as he practically jumps to reach Brian’s shoulder. “I won’t let someone with talent such as yours to-” Matt trails off as he sees what Brian sees that got the brown-eyed man froze in terror on the doorway to the kitchen.

It’s Zack. He is out cold, lifeless, lying in a weird angle on the floor, surrounded by splinters of ceramic dishes. One of his arms lays weakly over his midriff, as if he was holding his chest before he collapsed, while the other is pressed between his body and the floor.

***

A/N. Ok, so I don’t know anything about Bachista in the USA, who had attempted it, when, and how. At least, in my country not even a single doctor had. Heh.
