Miscellany and a note for my neighbor

I wanted to express my condolences for those who have lost friends and cats recently, it's a sad month from what it seems.

It's been a while since I truly did a life update thing...so I will try. Yesterday I had an interview early in the a.m. in SF and operating on meager sleep, I found my lower brain was up and running and my upper brain wasn't--meaning I could move and go places and get things done, but not sit and think straight. Most of the time it's the opposite and I'm a slow monkey poking the keyboard with thoughts.

Part of the slowness is my horrible allergies which have been HORRIBLE lately. So I finally got my allergy prescriptions filled--they cost much less than I was expecting!-- and hopefully I'll get healthier with them. I worked on my bike and have an appointment to take it in today to get that horrible rubbing noise looked at and my brakes aligned, and I biked around the lake. Then I spent the evening totally redoing my homework assignment for my design class, which sucked, but turned out much nicer I think.

I'm mostly looking for work at this point, I have a few jobs here and there but they're low paying and meager. I've had a couple interviews and am still waiting to learn the success or failure of them. I think with so many out of work, it's hard to find freelance gigs because all the unemployed people are applying also. I have projects to do on my own, but none of them pay, so it's looking more alluring to go back to full-time. Although I'm a hermit at heart, I'm also missing the bustle and company of an office--but I do love my freedom and the ambience of my living room, so it is really a trade off. Since I found myself applying to a few full time jobs, I decided to go all the way and apply to a couple jobs at Google and other large companies.

I'm doing the Professional Sequence in graphic design at UCB Ext, but unfortunately the third class in the series isn't being offered till summer, meaning I can't finish the sequence till next fall. Anselm's applying to grad schools, and probably moving away in the fall, so my finishing the program doesn't look good if we move together. I flirted with the idea of applying to an MFA in design myself but I'm not that certain, my portfolio isn't that great ... and I'm thinking I should just get an internship if I'm going to go that route.

My friend and neighbor Ode just moved out of my building and I'll miss his presence around the place. We didn't hang out much but it was fun to look outside and see him messing with his motorcycle and run into the cat wandering the stairwells. He's such a positive, and easygoing guy that having him around was a fun, calming influence. His apartment's currently vacant but as you all know if you read this journal, I got a new neighbor upstairs--to whom I'm tempted to write the following note.

While you were out

While you were out, a family of hippos snuck into your apartment to perform jumping jacks on your bed. Since they threaten the peace and security of the building, I am currently researching hippo tranqs. I urge you to lock your doors and replace your bed with a sturdier, quieter model. Should the hippos return, you can rest assured I will rush in valiantly to defend the safety of your apartment. Sincerely, your downstairs neighbor.
