These Masks We Wear

1. Conversations

“How did you get this number?” she whispers into the phone, trying to be quiet so her dad wouldn’t hear her.

“How do you think I got this number?”

If she tries, she can almost see his grin on the other end of the line. She sighs. “Nathan.”

“I’ll never tell. You might be right, you might not. It doesn’t really matter, does it? How are you doing, Claire-bear?”

She’s so excited to hear from him and so glad to finally have him back that she doesn’t notice how strained and tired he sounds, and how unlike himself he’s acting.

2. Promises

He’s coming to town! She feels like skipping around the house, but he’s made her promise not to tell anyone. He says that he’s still not comfortable with everything that’s happened, and that he’s not comfortable being around Bennet. “It’s understandable”, she tells him, and promises not to say a word to anyone. He can’t get there until Halloween, but he swears that they’ll have a great time and that he’ll make it up to her that she’s going to miss all the festivities this year. She tells him that it doesn’t matter; she’d give anything to see him again.

3. Costumes

She agrees to go costume shopping with the other cheerleaders, even though she’s told them that she’s just going to spend the night with family instead of going to the big party. She finds it so easy to lie to everyone around her for his sake. She tries on all of the sluttiest costumes, laughing and joking that it’s as close as she’ll come to trick or treating this year. She can’t help but admire the way she looks as a sexy French maid, and wonders if he’d like it. She comes back and buys the costume later that evening.

4. Lies

She’s already lied to her friends. She tells her parents that she’s going to volunteer at the local hospital, helping kids safe by x-raying their candy. She tells them that she’ll spend the night at a friend’s house, watching scary movies. She kisses West, and tells him to go to the party without her, that she’d much rather stay in instead of participating in a crass commercialized holiday. She doesn’t know if he believes her or not, but it doesn’t matter. She waits until dark, covers her miniscule costume with a much larger nun’s habit, and kisses her parents goodbye.

5. Preparations

She’s the first to get to their motel. She gets the key from the desk clerk, and lets herself in. Quickly removing the nun costume, she double-checks how the maid’s outfit looks. The black corset makes her waist look even tinier and her breasts larger. The white ruffled skirt reminds her of a cheerleader’s skirt, only shorter. Her fishnets are held up by black lace garters, and the final touch is her blood-red lipstick and feather duster. Peter knocks on the door, and when she opens the door and sees Sylar instead, her scream echoes around the empty parking lot.

6. Masquerades

He quickly covers her mouth, and pushes her inside the room. He lets her go as his face fades back into that of Peter’s.

“God, Peter, you scared me senseless!” She hits him on the shoulder, then pushes him against the door and kisses him.

He kisses her back, and then says “I thought you’d find it amusing, not scary. I already told you that I’d run into a girl that could look like anyone else, and that I was going to be wearing a costume. I thought you’d make the connection.” He kisses her again.

She quickly forgives him.

7. Damages

They’ve wrecked the hotel room. The table’s turned over, and the bathroom looks like it’s been flooded. One of the chairs is lying on the ground, with it’s legs broken. One of her garters hangs from the TV antennae. She just doesn’t care. It’s been so long since she’s been able to be with him like this, and she can’t control how much he affects her. She keeps moaning and screaming as he pounds into her from behind, and its absolute bliss. Loving him may be wrong, but it’s the sort of wrong she doesn’t want to ever stop doing.

8. Partings

She cries when she realizes that its morning, that she’s got to go home and pretend that nothing has happened. He holds her for just a few minutes, then tells her that it’s time. He watches her get dressed, and then kisses her again before she leaves. After making sure that he’s picked up anything she’s left behind, like her garters, panties, and feather duster, he leaves the room. He returns the keys to the clerk, and as he walks back to his rental car, he allows his features to return to normal. He always hates pretending to be Peter.

9. Mementos

It’s been two months, and he still can’t get her out of his head. He wonders if she’d fall for the same masquerade if he was to return to her as Peter again. Sylar decides that it’s just too risky. Maybe the emo wonder has returned to her for real. Maybe she’s realized how out of character “Peter” was acting. Instead of calling her, he removes her mementos from their hiding place, and sinks back into his bed. If he can’t have her again, at least he has his memories of her and her magical skills with the feather duster.

10. Realizations

She realizes fairly quickly that her lover wasn’t Peter. He’d vehemently denied it, and the DNA test that her fathers had insisted on had proved him right. Candace’s body had been found, her brain missing, and Claire knows who her lover was.

Sylar finds her a year later, alone in the house except for their child. She fights him, but still trades her life for that of her baby. He can’t help but wondering what powers the little boy has as he removes the screaming child from his mother’s limp arms.

They find her body later that night, sans brain.
