A loud noise.
A shout.
A metallic taste.
Pain.
Takaba Akihito, 23 years old cameraman, lay on the hard concrete. He felt numb. Every inch of his body wascovered in blood.
'W-why can’t I move?’ thought Akihito, panicking as he tried to get up.
It’s hurt, everywhere.
As the sound of ambulance got nearer, Akihito finally succumbed to the darkness.

Asami was pissed off. He looked at his two trusted bodyguards - Kirishima and Suoh - both of whom flinched from hiscold stare. They could practically feel the dark aura surrounding their boss. Just a few minutes ago, Asami was riding in his usual black BMW. Kirishima was inthe front seat with Suoh as the driver. He was reading his legal/illegal business report when he heard a gulp from Suoh. For a stoic man like Suoh making that sound, Asami knew that there was something wrong. Even his secretary, Kirishima turned his head.
“Yes, Suoh?”
“Uhm, sir. There is a problem with the car.” said Suoh carefully, cautious to relay the news as to not release Asami’s furry. “The brake is not working.”
Once he finished his sentence, there were5 seconds of dead silence.
“Care to explain further, Suoh?” replied Asami calmly, even though his loyal bodyguards did not miss the cold tone.
Just as Suoh was about to answer, Kirishima shouted, “Look out!”
There was a blue car that was not following the road regulations. It cut through during the red traffic light and almost hit them if not because of Suoh’s good driving skill. As soon as he heard Kirishima’s warning, he quickly steered the car in the opposite direction. The three car occupants were so focused on the blue car that they did not notice a young man crossing the road. Within next second, an ugly bump could be heard. Both Suoh and Kirishima’s eyes widen as the car collided with that person. The young man rolled to the side of the car before he fell into the hard pavement as the car hit the district pole.
Asami grunted as his body jerked forward. He silently thanked the invention of the seatbelt. He made a quick scan towards his subordinates to check if they were injured. It seemed that the three of them were alright apart from a few bruises; however, he could not say the same for the young man. He glanced throughthe car windows. People were already gathered surrounding the young man.
“Kirishima, call the ambulance. Suoh, call one of the men to bring another car.” instructed Asami.
Asami being Asami did not particularly care whether the young man was alive or dead. He could always bribe the doctors, the media, and the kid’s parents if he had to. Well, he at least made a bit of effort to save for the kid’s life by calling the ambulance. That aside, right now he had to find the person who messed with his car. He would teach them the consequences for crossing with Asami Ryuuichi.

Akihito stirred. He tried to move. Ouch, that hurts. This room smells like antiseptic. Am I in the hospital or something? As he opened his eyes, he tried to look at his surroundings, only to find darkness. Weird, is it night time already? But don’t hospitals usually have windows. Why is it so dark in here? He heard a door click. Is someone coming?
“Aki!” shouted the two familiar voices. “You’re awake.”
“Kou, Takato?”
“Yeah, it’s us. Gosh, look at you dude. Making us worry like that!” cried Kou. Akihito cringed in pain when his body was suddenly hugged by his friend.
“Oh, I’m sorry.” said Kou apolitically when he noticed his friend’s discomfort.
“I’m glad that you’re finally awake, Aki.” Takato spoke as he patted Akihito’s back. Akihito turned to the direction of the voice as he practically could not see his friends.
“How long I have been out?”
“Three days or so.” answered Takato.
“Yeah man, you worried us. Your parent’s came early this morning and told us that you were still unconscious. They so worried and sounded miserable. Well, at least I can tell them the good news.”
“I see.” replied Akihito guiltily. “Hey, Kou, do you mind turning on the light? It’s so dark here. ”
Both Kou and Takato’s faces paled although Akihito couldn’t notice it. “Uh….Aki? Why do we need to turn on the light?” asked Takato carefully. Now that he noticed, there was not one moment his injured friend’s eyes had focused on them.
“Haha, I know. You’re joking right, Aki?” added Kou tried to laugh it off.
“Is it weird to ask you guys to switch on the light? I don’t particularly feel comfortable chatting with you guys in the dark. If I could get up, I would do it myself.” Akihito began to get pissed off.
“Ano, Aki. Ehmm… it’s….uh…… it’s….bright in…uh…here.” As soon as Takato said that, both he and Kou hugged his best friend.
“We’re sorry.” whispered Kou as realisation dawned upon Akihito. The three youngsters comforted each other as sobs filled the room.
*
“Sorry, Takaba-san.” said Dr.Satou. This was the second time someone said sorry to his condition. After the sobbing ended, Takato called the doctor in charge of Akihito. When Dr.Satou came and saw the red, puffy eyes of his patient, he could only conclude that Akihito already knew about the blindness. He took a deep breath. He had not notified Akihito’s parents yet. He understood that Akihito was a photographer. Losing his sight was the worst thing that could happen to him. He planned to take further tests today just to make sure before he broke the devastating news to the parents. However, as the patient had already woken up, his plan did not work.
“H-how d-did this h-happen?” stammered Akihito.
Dr.Satou took the young man’s hand to comfort him as he recounted the accident.

One week later….
“Asami-sama.” called the secretary. “The matter was already taken care for. We have made sure that no one knew that you were involved in the accident. Even if someone were to find out, there will be no trace to link it to you.”
“I see. The parents?” asked Asami nonchalantly as he sipped his bourbon.
“The father used to be a photojournalist. He did manage to find rumour and gossip about you being involved in the accident. Yesterday, he tried to contact us but we turned him down. He went to the paper after that.”
“And?”
“No one believes him, Sir.”
Asami chuckled. “It is to be expected. No publishing company would dare to go against me. I can always erase him if he becomes too persistent. Have you paid the parents?”
“Yes we have, Asami-sama. But they rejected the money.” fidgeted Kirishima. “One of our men offered them a million yen each. I heard that the mother practically threw the suitcase into his face.”
“Ah, I had noticed the band-aids on his nose. So that’s what the cause was.”
“Do you want to personally take action, Sir?”
“Hmmph, dealing with a parent who loved their child is not worth of my time. They should rather be glad that their son is still alive.” sneered Asami. “ What about the other matter? Is he agreeing to meet?”
“Regarding that, it seems that Endo-san has had a heart attack and is now hospitalised. I am afraid the meeting has to be postponed.”
Endo was one of his business partners and a potential client. He had done a few transactions in the past with the old man and the results were satisfying till now.
“Kirishima, clear my schedule for two days from today. He has done well and visiting him will ensure future partnership.” commanded Asami.
“Consider it is done, Asami-sama.” bowed the secretary.
“And the fool mechanic who failed to check the car?”
“He is waiting at the basement room 2 as you instructed.” Asami smirked. Time to teach that fool a lesson for being careless.

2 days later…
“Yes, you are doing well. Keep going Takaba-san. Just a bit more.” cheered Imai, one of the nurses selected to take care of him. Right now, Akihito was performing some training to get used to his blindness, such as walking with a stick and carrying out general day-to-day tasks. It was the sixth day of his training programme. Within that duration, Akihito had improved a lot. The last thing he wanted was to be drowned in self-pity and being pitied by others. Hence, he wanted to be independent as soon as possible. True, he could not see now, but not once did he give up his dream as a professional photographer. He still believed that one day he would be able to use his camera again. There will always be a way, repeated Akihito over and over again.
Akihito moved his stick to find his way around. His job now was to find the entrance door. There were a few times when his stick hit the wall and he knew he was in the wrong direction. He kept trying until he noticed the different sound comig out when he hit the object with his stick. He used his hand to feel the door handle.
“I found it, Imai-san. The door.” shouted Akihito once he felt the cold metal door handle against his skin.
“Well done!” praised Imai. “Now that the practice is over, it’s time to go to your room.”
“Ano, Imai-san. Can I go to my room by myself today?” asked Akihito with determination in his now sightless eyes. “I mean still under your watch, but without your help.”
Imai watched the young man. She knew that Akihito wanted to be independent soon and she respected that. She weighed her choice. There should not be too many people in the hospital during this time. It will be okay, I guess.
Akihito was delighted when the nurse agreed. He quickly opened the door and swung his stick around. Akihito frowned when he felt he hit something hard with his stick. He poked and prodded at the foreign object in front of him, not knowing that instead of an object, it was a person and that person was none other than the great Asami Ryuuichi.
