The room was probably the quietest in the house.
The kitchen ventilator fan was going full-bore as someone cooked; several other people had loud, depressing music blaring out; someone - probably Leeteuk - was vacuuming… and Eunhyuk sat alone in a corner of his room, squashed right up against both walls with his face buried in his knees and his arms over his head.
Eunhyuk-ah, you're perfect; you did well, I love you.
"Hyung, hyung, hyung," he whimpered as he rocked and sniffled, repeating Hangeng's words over and over in his head.
It wasn't fair, he shouldn't have been taken away. Some idiot who didn't even have the brains to not get into his car after drinking too much should not have the right to steal away Hangeng and all that he was. But that was what happened and Eunhyuk couldn't believe he was never coming back.
Is Heechul alright? How is Heechul doing? They were very close… best friends, right? Is Heechul holding up? It must be very hard on Heechul now…
Everyone seemed to think that Heechul was the only one who cared. Everyone seemed to think that Heechul had somehow stoppe functioning ith the loss of the Chinaman. But it was Eunhyuk who had always been there for Hangeng when Heechul had been throwing his little hissy fits, Eunhyuk who had helped Hangeng with his Korean when Heechul taught him incorrect things to make fun of him, Eunhyuk who'd mucked around with him and Donghae when they wanted to dance, Eunhyuk who'd been the one who never fought with Hangeng. But no, no-one else cared about that. Some even thought that Hangeng and Heechul had been lovers, and Eunhyuk knew for a fact that his hyungs had never done anything like that.
Heechul must be taking this very hard, Hangeng was very close to Heechul, I hope Heechul doesn't get depressed, this must be a very difficult time…
Heechul, Heechul Heechul.
But despite all that Eunhyuk didn't want comfort from the others. He didn't want Leeteuk coming in to get him back on his feet, didn't want Donghae coming in to cheer him up, didn't want Sungmin whispering comforting nonsense to him while he cried.
He wante Hangeng, the one person he couldn't have.
He uncurled himself and reached for the nightstand, grabbing a small piece of card and holding it far enough from his face that he didn't wreck it with his tears.
"Ah, ah, hyung, the mail arrived," Eunhyuk chirped, using his chin and shoulder to hold the phone in place. "Oh, there's a postcard from you!"
"The monkey?"
"Hm, yeah."
Hangeng chuckled. "Henry showed it to me when we were out, I thought of you."
Silence buzzed down the line.
"Don't cry," Hangeng murmured, smiling.
"Hyung… did you write this?"
"Yes."
Such a disobedient dongsaeng. Eunhyuk cried anyway.
His face was back in his knees and soaking through his jeans again, the postcard held safely out of harm's way. It was a short, simple message, but Eunhyuk knew it meant a lot.
"You promised… forever," Eunhyuk sobbed, willing to give anything if he could have just one more hug, just hear 'saranghae' one more time in his lilting, throaty Chinese voice.
He clutched the fraying-at-the-edges, six-by-four card rectangle in his fingers like the most important and precious thing in the world, because right at that moment, it was.
Take care of your health, hyung loves Eunhyuk forever.
