All beaches in NSW and Queensland have been closed and the Manly ferry service in Sydney has been suspended because of a tsunami alert following a major earthquake in the Solomon Islands.
The tsunami has reportedly destroyed houses in Gizo, in the Solomon Islands after a wave several metres high swept through the harbour town.
The Bureau of Meteorology issued the tsunami alert for NSW at 10.29am saying waves may impact the Sydney region after 11.30am.
