RPG stuff: good ideas from Robin Laws

Robin talks about his attempts to preserve characterization in his new 4th Edition D&D game. To my gaming buddies out there: what do you think of this? Personally I think it's a great idea: it's simple to prepare, gets the players involved, and still allows them to be surprised by the outcome of things.

These things are great if you're tailoring an adventure to your characters... It's a little more difficult (though not impossible) to do this with modules...
Robin Laws often has his players help control the character creation of the others in the party... And this is very much an interesting concept... However, for it to be most beneficial, the players must be ok with releasing a little bit of their own creative control....
I personally like creating an interesting background (with plenty of plot hooks) for my characters and then making sure I'm proactive about pursuing them... It has to be a 2 way street.... The GM can't do it all on his own (I've run games where I actively tried to incorporate a character's background and the player just didn't seem to care or respond)....
