[political rant]

Former Democratic senator John Breaux is considering running in the October 20 primary for Louisiana governor. The only reason he hasn't officially thrown his name in? He's waiting on the state's attorney general to determine if he meets the legal requirements to enter the race.

And what, you might ask, would the problem be? Breaux is registered to vote and lists his primary address in Maryland.

Apparently, they're trying to squeak him in under a technicality of the law -- to be eligible to run for a statewide elected office, the Louisiana Constitution requires that a person be a citizen of the state for "at least the preceding five years."

Most people in Louisiana residents live paycheck to paycheck. The school system is rated 48 out of 50 states. People here are still recovering from Katrina and Rita. The last thing we need is some wealthy, Yankee, carpet bagger coming down here, stealing more money from the coffers, and making empty promises. The man moved out of state, he took a job out of state as a lobbyist, he changed his primary address and voter registration to be out of state, and, while he might have some family and political ties down here, what right does he have to bend the law to suit his needs? Honestly, it doesn't speak very highly to his regards to state and federal laws when he's so willing to find ways around them to get what he wants.
