[REVIEW] Divergent (good)

Jul 19, 2014 14:09

I am going to empty my backlog on these reviews. Expect 7 reviews between today and tomorrow

This was an entertaining movie - although I do wonder how people who didn't read the books fared, because it seemed to me that more than a few plot points weren't explained enough in the movie.

Of course, the movie, like the book, suffers from inconsistencies in its worldbuilding (I do wonder at the prevalence of caste societies in YA dystopias. I guess they're there because they relate to the teen-aged experience, both in terms of groups not mingling and of black-and-white thinking, but I have very rarely found any of these caste systems build on something that actually makes sense.)

I don't remember if it was particularly feminist-friendly, aside from having a heroine as the primary role.
