Back in Canaan, Jacob and his family are starving, so he sends ten of his sons to Egypt to buy grain. They go ask Joseph to sell them some grain, but while Joseph recognizes them, they don’t, and he accuses them of being spies. Joseph puts them in jail, and after three days, he frees nine of them with the mission to go to Canaan and bring back the eleventh brother.
They figure it’s some sort of divine punishment for what they had done to Joseph and accept. Joseph sends them back with grain and all their money.
Jacob doesn’t want to let Benjamin go (because he and Joseph were full brothers and sons of his favorite wife, and since he lost Joseph already, he doesn’t want to risk another). His sons try to convince him. One of them offers to leave his own sons as hostages which is strange, I mean “if I don’t get back my brother you can kill your grandsons” doesn’t quite seem like the best negotiation strategy.
