That’s How Dorks Roll

Quote of the Day: "Mistakes are the portals of discovery." - James Joyce
Reading: The Subtle Knife (His Dark Materials, Book 2) -Philip Pullman

So because I can, and you always have the option of not continuing on here are my most recent book reviews. Because that’s how dorks roll. :P

The Black Unicorn, Terry Brooks

The Black Unicorn is Terry Brooks’ second adventure into the Magic Kingdom of Landover and it only gets better! Magic Kingdom for Sale - SOLD! was a really good book, this one was a great book. I finished it in a day, I couldn’t put it down. We get to learn more about the history of Landover and its Wizards, which I personally found very interesting.

I’ve read reviews of this book, in which people said the story line is slow. I have to disagree, its one event after the next, it’s really fast paced. What’s slow are the characters realizations about events pertaining to them. But the character development is all a part of this, very enjoyable, ride. Not even 100 pages in I understood Ben’s plight, I just didn’t know how it came to be. He doesn’t figure out his problem until the end.

The prism cat Edgewood Dirk, but we can call him Dirk, is by far one of the most colorful characters in “The Black Unicorn.” He is super sarcastic, has quite the mouth on him, and is just so funny. Many times during his commentary or tirades I found myself laughing or grinning ear to ear.

I’m going to definitely continue on with this journey into the Magic Kingdom of Landover. It’s genuinely such an enjoyable read thus far.

The Golden Compass, Philip Pullman

I picked up the Golden Compass as a book to tide me over, and I’m glad I did. I am not disappointed, and glad to have not wasted my money. The book starts off with an attempted murder, straight and to the point, how can you go wrong with that?

I’ve read reviews that this book was controversial and that this was a kid’s book. I’m not to sure about either. I get the underlying religious themes and messages, but controversial? I can see how one could argue it, but I don’t buy it. As far as being a kid’s book I doubt this one as well. Maybe the movie can be a kid’s movie but I don’t see how the complexity of the situation and the content/ subject matter can be interesting for kids. It might be the fantasy/ epic adventure that does, but again the core subject matter in the book doesn’t seem to me that it would appeal to most kids.

Enough with that, here’s the review. I overall liked that book… a lot. At first it was pure curiosity that kept me reading, because I had to know why this happened, what’s going to happen next? The beginning chapters were a slow read but it really picks up. It’s fast paced, that I lost complete track of any timeline. I get the sequence of events, but as to how long things they took, that got muddled along the way, and towards the end when they mention the amount of time that has lapsed since a certain event took place I was baffled. It did not seem that long.

Want to know what I'm talking about? Then I guess you've got to pick up the book. :) But don't worry I enjoyed it and hopefully you will too.
