Summary: Of earth through blurry eyes of a child...
She screams at him, voice taking an unpleasant quality and Jonas swallows the spoonful of soup with more effort than it should take, spoon slowly sliding out between pursed lips. He doesn’t taste the normal bouquet of flavours, liquid heat scalding his tongue. He’s too busy staring intently at the flower pattern on the tablecloth, vision distorted with the familiar sting.
His father starts saying something but she interrupts him and accuses him of being useless as she gets up from her chair. And all the while Jonas tries to follow the curves of the floral design, eyes tracing the light green lines along the beige surface, backtracking at the dead ends of the leaves and coming to brief pauses at the large Cyclamen buds. And it’s strange to him how the electric light seems too bright, overpowering in the small kitchen as it frames his parent’s figures.
And just as abruptly as their argument had started, it ends as she storms out. She doesn’t spare Jonas a glance as she passes and nervously, he bites down on his bottom lip and inhales through his mouth, apologies stacking up on his mind. His father gives a resigned sigh and moves to the balcony, door opening with a crisp sound. And Jonas is left alone, tears streaming down his cheeks and into the soup as he raises his spoon and dutifully eats.
Cyclamen flowers are the symbol or resignation and a 'goodbye'.
In the canon universe, Jonas's mother leaves his father and him. Jonas is five in this snippet.
