Summary: Of leaving Space behind...
It’s Jonas’s first day at the kindergarten and he’s terrified, clinging onto his father’s hand, fingers digging into the man’s soft palm as they walk down a hall drowned in sunlight. The morning glow tumbles through the tall windows, reflecting off of white walls and Jonas winces, burying his face in his father’s jacket, strong smell of tobacco a protective halo around him. But before he can tear up again, the man kneels down, pulling him into an embrace and gently caresses the fear away from Jonas’s cheeks.
‘You’ve got your book?’-he asks, businesslike as his face takes a stern expression and Jonas nods, indicating the item he holds firmly at his side. His father smiles and standing, ruffles the boy’s hair, fingers catching in the curls. They’re approached by a bald man, his thin lips uttering words of welcome and his father answers him in kind. So Jonas uses the opportunity to pull into the brown folds of the coat once more, eyes tightly shut as he imagines the darkness filled with stars.
Unseeing, he’s lead into a room, children’s voices wrapping around him; laughter and questions spoken in high tones, foreign language filling his head. His father presses his lips against his forehead, whispering a soft goodbye against his skin and wraps his large coat around Jonas’s tiny frame with a promise to come back soon.
‘Be good.’-he urges and leaves, covering the distance to the door in a few wide strides. So Jonas tries to concentrate on the pictures of the round planets in his book, fingers tracing the rings around Saturn with religious dedication.
Someone approaches him, spilling a surprised ‘Oh, hello,’ and looking up, Jonas is greeted with eyes that absorb the sun and reflect it golden.
‘Hello.’-he replies, English slipping along his tongue with a heavy quality but he’s too busy watching the other boy as he gazes down at Jonas’s book.
‘What’s this?’-he asks, setting down on his knees for the briefest of moments before frowning in contempt and declaring, -‘It looks like gibberish to me.’
‘Russian-‘-protests Jonas but he’s being pulled up and pulled away.
‘C’mon,’-says the boy and smiles as he pulls Jonas free of his safety and the book filled with space, -‘let’s go play with the other kids.’
~End~
Based of one of the snippet's Kei wrote me for my birthday. Her version is written from Ryan's POV. I expanded the verse and set it in an alternate reality where instead of splitting up, Jonas parents stayed together and emigrated to the USA 10 years earlier.
I guess the implication is that growing up with both parents, growing up in a different environment and growing up with Ryan would lead Jonas becoming a different person to the Jonas in 'Polaris'. Ryan would most likely also be greatly influenced by this and maybe I'm just being a hopeless romantic but maybe...just maybe these two may say the important things to each other before Jonas breaks both of them...
