This until one day for some reason he isn’t even if he has his eyes closed, and his breath gets caught in his throat when Cas brings Dean’s right hand to his mouth and kisses his wrist first and his knuckles after, and then lies down but keeps their fingers entwined.
Dean pretends to be asleep all this time, but he’s feeling overwhelmed and his heart is beating so fast that he thinks his ribcage might explode. So he gives Cas’s hand a light squeeze, enough to pass it as a reflex while he’s sleeping, and then Cas squeezes it back, drawing a bit closer.
A year ago, Dean would have wondered how Cas couldn’t have felt like he was getting his hands dirty, but now he just feels like he got some huge gift he doesn’t exactly deserve. He just hopes he lives long enough to see the day when he feels like he does.
