My son is 3yrs old and I get raised eyebrows and comments ranging from 'That's great!' to 'What's wrong with public school?' when I tell people that I plan to homeschool. Well, I don't PLAN to homeschool, I've been doing it all along ( Read more... )

Yeah, I'm not worried about that at all. My son is VERY social and he gets to socialize quite a bit.

I know what you're talking about though. :)

Honestly, I don't consider public school to be a good arena for 'socialization' anyway. It's a completely artificial environment that doesn't reflect the 'real world' in any way. In many ways, I feel that it does a disservice to our children, socially.

Kids come out of school unprepared for a world where they have 'peers' who may be much older or younger than they are, where they may not be given guidance and supervision, may actually be expected to think for themselves and have initiative! lol

I think the ageism is a really big one though. Kids coming out of a school environment have a really hard time making the leap from seeing older adults as solely authority figures (without much real authority), to people who may be their peers at work.

Anyway, yes... it CAN be a concern, but hopefully I will be able to stave off MOST of the awkwardness by keeping Skye involved with people.

I plan to reevaluate things as time goes on. I may decide to send him to High School (although by that time, he will probably be on college level work) just to let him have that 'social scene'. That's where all the major stuff happens anyway. I guess we'll see!! :)

Awesome ... I knew you had already thought of that, but it bears repeating.

I took one of my homeschooled friends with me to my Senior Prom, he loved it! I agree High School is where all the cool social things happen.
