This book read in a really discombobulated way for me. Maybe I'm just used to Stackpole's writing style, or maybe my stupid reading disability is making it hard for me to understand what happened. I think the main plot of the book was to drag Han out of the gutter and back into fighting shape, replace Chewie with something called a Ryn name Droma, and heal Mara Jade. For a lack of a better phrase right now, everything happened so easily. I mean, Han is back on his feet BAM and conveniently finds himself a companion that he initially dislikes and then owes his life to, and Mara Jade is magically fixed by drinking the tears of an agent/captive? of the Vong. All too easy. The only character that felt written in depth was Han, but he was so disagreeable and downright nasty at times so it was hard to be on his side. I did like that parts of the book were from Threepio''s POV. I would love for more stories to have a droid as a major POV character.
There were too many names for my stupid, sleep-deprived brain to soak up and process. None of the characters had secondary features or traits that would have helped me keep them characterized in my head. I was completely lost during all of the NRI operation parts.
This book felt really rushed. It reads like it's mainly setting up stuff for the next book. The pacing slowed to a crawl somewhere in the middle and I really had to force myself to keep reading.
Overall: 6.5/10
