REAL FOOD

agarit has a food community on her friendlist that I someimes visit just for... The community is called ua_kyxap and we're not talking fancy super-advanced crossover cuisine, it's REAL FUCKING FOOD. The kind of food that doesn't even need much spicing because all the ingredients are supposed to be REAL FUCKING INGREDIENTS. On impulse, I want to write that my grandmother cooked me stuff like that, but that would be a lie.
You don't need to understand Ukranian. It's all in the pictures. I don't even want to eat it, but it fascinates me so much.

My great-grandmother, the relative that associates with food-I-got-as-A-kid-and-miss-now, was all about borscht and fried pasties. Other things too, ofc, but that's what I miss the most. The taste of real veggies (home-grown, sun-fueled) and the sourness that her borscht and stews had is something I can't buy for money here. I really like the concept of all-in-one stew, by the way. My mom doesn't cook like that, but I've started doing it when Stangel and I moved in together and saucy stew/thick soup is one of my favourite forms of food now. I coked a lovely variation today, that was spiced to lead to two childhood culinary flashbacks - my great-grandmother's cooking and Hare Krishna food. Say whatever you want about those guys, but their take of Indian is still one of my five favourite kinds of food of all time. Sweet potato, green peas, carrots, onions and fresh cabbage in tamarind and tomato sauce, spiced with I don't quite remember what Indian and cummin. With thrown in fried halloumi and, as the last touch before serving, apples. The juicy sour stickyness, the fresh vegetables, the salty halloumi, the crunchy apples...
