The sky is blue: DISCUSS.
One of the most loved stories of my childhood is how I once, at the age of five, made the mistake of asking my mother why sugar dissolves better in hot tea. My mother is good with children in that aspect that she talks with them like with equals. Unfortunately it comes from her inability ot understand that not all people think like her. Oh, and she has a degree in Chemistry.
She explained it all nicely and unpedagogically, about molecules and how warmth is actually them moving faster and all that stuff. I was a bright child and understood what the Hell she was talking about. Still, a very typical thing to do for mom.
Today, she referred to this story, but mixed up and thought it was about why the sky was blue. Hilarity followed as she actually started trying to explain it. There was lot of bad science going on. I made fun of her and made no attempt to explain, as I could not. After a while, the last years studies got back, and I vaguely remembered that short waves get scattered easier than long waves. Then I lost it again, because I always forget that blue is shorter than red.
Asking a guy who graduated from the thingy that I dropped out from and googling lead to
Reyleigh dispersion. Stuff is nicely and my mom-unlike pedagogically explained
here.
