Two minutes before mine and Stangel's dinner was ready (we just had to add basil and garlic to our tomato dip), the neighbours rang on my door and told us that there was a fire on the tenth floor (I live on the eighth), so we'd better go outside. Second fire since last winter, the last time it was the flat next to the one that was on fire now, if I reckon correctly.
So we went out, and waited with a lot of othet people. Firemen came, all was cool, whoever was in that flat seemed to be able to walk out on his/her own.
But here is the reason for the rant. While we were waiting, we saw two people look out from a window on the ninth floor, the flat above mine. And I was all ignited by holy wrath and hope that the policepeople would drag them out and let us spit at them. It's not just that they were in their home, and we were out and hungry. It's more that I really hate it when people don't follow basic safety procedures. If there is a fire in a house, you walk out, especially if you live on the floor below. It's one of the things you do not question. Stuff like that is needless 99% of the time, but the one percent when lives are saved is worth it.
Same goes for fire drills. Same goes for learning how the safety wests on airplanes and ships work. Same goes for looking up the evacuation route on a ship or at your workplace. Because if an emergency occurs, the ignorant masses won't just panic and prove Darwin right, they will also fuck up the escape possibilities for those law-abiding citizens who cared to look up where the emergency exits are.
