RE: PISSED....
ABOUT THE PATCH
ok, so i've been on ortho evra (the patch) for 4 months now. i've been trying to find a good BC method for a year now, since mircette gave me breakthru bleeding. i've had a few problems on it, bloating, sore as hell nipples for the week before my period, blah blah blah. and my headaches (i'm a "migraineur" - i get headaches and have been recovering from "chronic daily headache syndrome" for over a year) have gotten worse. i don't mean during my off week, i mean ALL THE TIME. which didn't make sense, cause if you look at the packaging of the patch, it says 20 micrograms/day of estrogen (ethinyl estradiol). which is considered low dose, 30mcg/day is "normal", and 35mcg is high. (monophasicly speaking).
i can only be on low dose, as high dose estrogen increases my migraines, and harms my thyroid (i have a thyroid disease that is just in the beginnings and "the estrogen effect" is where estrogens increase the activity of your thyroid, which would speed up the progression of my autoimmune disease, hashimoto's). so i chose ortho evra because it was direct blood flow, meanign i'd have less ups and downs of estrogen during the day, possibly helping my headaches, and "low dose."
due to my annoying side effects, i have been considering switching for a few weeks. i was weighing the benefits, and the pain-in-the-ass part about switching.... so i looked into nuva ring (which i AM switching to in two weeks, you will find out why if you keep reading)...
on the nuva ring site, you will find this:
"The Truth" notice how much estrogen the patch TRULY releases. now, i am going to contact nuvaring (organon is the company name, they make mircette too, so i trust them, cause mircette is awesome) and verify the information, but.....
THE PATCH RELEASES 50 MCG/DAY OF ESTROGEN (depending on where it is). this makes complete sense, as if it's on your back (low blood supply to your back) less will be absorbed, but on a high blood supply area (i.e. PELVIS/HIPS) more will be absorbed. yeah, i'm screwed. 50 mcg/day is unbelievably high. and i can see why they'd put extra, to make sure enough was absorbed. *BADWORD* ASSHOLES. they should at least market it correctly, cause now i have headaches every fucking day again, AND i am having symptoms of hyperthyroidism (over-activity) - my heartrate is rarely under 100, depression (up to wazoo), it goes on...
and... i have to tell my best friend's story too... she was on ortho tri cyclen happily for years, basically since she started her period, for heavy bleeding and bitch cramps, until her gyno decided to switch her to the patch cause it was trendy (she had NO problems on OTC), yeah, that's when her endometriosis actually started. high estrogen is BAD BAD BAD for endo, yeah, now she's in hell because of it, and i mean, it's really horrible, the pain and everything. (of course, she has now switched BC methods, trying to fix this, but there is no going back).
fortunately for me, the damage is somewhat reversible. my headaches will get better once i switch, but my thyroid may have been pushed into its downward spiral, which has very severe, but hopefully manageable, consequences. my friend, on the other hand... let's just say you never want to wish endometriosis on anyone.
so yeah... if you, for any reason, should be on low-dose estrogen BC, the patch is a very very bad idea.
..end rant..
