Darkroom, 9/13

I had a DJ gig last night. Yeah, that's right; I live in Chicago and had a DJ gig at a bar without televisions during a season opener featuring the Bears and Packers. Maybe you want to guess how many people were in attendance. It wasn't quite as many as a normal person has fingers and toes. I can't say I was terribly surprised by that, though. I knew what I was getting into. I watched the first half and left home. Before I got there I didn't know anything about what was happening, except that there was a band and two girls playing with Serato before me. Someone added that pretentious black and white Joy Division biopic too. No better way to get in a good mood than by watching the life of a despicable person for two hours, right?

The girls had no idea who I was. They didn't know what time I'd start or anything. The movie ended. The band played. The girls picked songs from a laptop. Then I pulled out some records around midnight. A loud buzz emanated from the turntables, so eventually I bagged the records and used CDs only. That didn't turn out so badly. The eight people who stuck around after the band weren't going to start dancing or even tapping their toes, so I played mid- and downtempo music for an hour. The staff was actually pretty pleased with my choices. It was 12:45 and they were about to wrap up, but told me to keep playing while they counted the registers and hung out with their friends. So I kept at it for a little while with the lights on. (It was a bit strange.) I couldn't find my pen, so I didn't even note my set list. But it ended with the xx, Grizzly Bear and Saint Etienne. It could've been much worse.
