So to sum up KONATSU RESPECTS AND ADORES HYUUGA the end ♥ BUT IT IS OBVIOUSLY MORE THAN THAT. Mostly, Hyuuga did exactly what Konatsu needed for someone to do at a really pivotal point in his life. And. This will all be sort of out of order and rambly and just as it comes to me, but woo! /o/
TO START OUT WITH. On being friends! Honestly, until Hyuuga mentioned it, the thought of having friends had never really entered into Konatsu’s mind. For him, there’s nothing more to life than striving toward his goal. As a child, I’m sure he was outcast from his family because of his lack of ability, and as such wouldn’t have been able to easily make friends with the noble families. Of what we see of him at the academy, he’s ridiculed by his classmates and outcast there. So. I am fairly comfortable in saying that Konatsu has NEVER had a friend before Hyuuga. But it’s not such a huge angsty deal, because in Konatsu’s mind, he doesn’t NEED friends. Friends get in the way of his goal which, up until he met Hyuuga, was trying to find some way to prove himself worthy in the eyes of his family. And even after he meets Hyuuga, that single-minded determination doesn’t really go away. Konatsu’s been fighting against a family that brands him as useless and unnecessary for most of his life, and even though he now wants to be strong enough to rise above that, the stigma still remains. So one of the most important things to him is STILL being useful and necessary to the Black Hawks. And friends--even friends within the Black Hawks!-would just distract from that! I mean, he never gets close enough to any of them to even call them by their NAMES. I think it’s a big point that the way that Konatsu refers to everyone is by rank. Even Kuroyuri, who he seems to get along with, is Commander Kuroyuri. (Shuri’s probably only an exception because idk if Shuri has a rank yet). So yeah, Konatsu. Doesn’t really let people get close, he always treats them on a level of formality and rank. So it’s. Only by phrasing things in the way that Hyuuga did of “Do you think you would let things get in the way of your duties?” would allow him to see the existence of having friends as something that’s even feasible. (and even then, as friends, Konatsu will ONLY treat Hyuuga different when it’s outside of their official function. When Ayanami is around, he’ll be back to calling him Lieutenant Commander, if he has work that needs to be done, it’s Lieutenant Commander, it’s only if they’re taking a break and CLEARLY not doing something related to the Black Hawks that he’d even THINK to call him Hyuuga)
PART OF HIS CRAZY DETERMINATION is also why he constantly gets irritated at Hyuuga for not doing his work. Self-esteem issues and the exceptional nature of his admission to the Black Hawks wound up into one, Konatsu is highly sensitive to the fact that he can’t slack off even for a moment. And while logically he KNOWS that Hyuuga being a slacker isn’t likely to get HIM kicked out of the Black Hawks, he’s still very determined to press the point. Work needs to get done.
