So I'm saving all my fic etc in prep for wiping el laptop-o by posting them into gmail drafts because I remember Chrissy used to do that all the time and I don't actually use my gmail, so. And I found this one and I remember I was going to post it before and then I just .. didn't.

it's not me that you love ;

leo knows when he sends the card, when he meets her coffee, when he kisses her again, that he's not epic. he's not her fairytale. he knows that her heart is more than a little crowded, and that one section for him never really seemed to exist at all. but he likes her, grows to love her, and hopes it masks the fact they both know. he is not the one she initially wanted. third place was never so sweet, or so he joked. this angered her, prompted responses of 'i'm with you because i want to,' but veronica is not clearly as great a liar as she thinks she is. maybe one day, she'll figure it out that yeah, he's not the dream, she didn't scribble his name on her notebook in hearts, but he won't break hers. really, he's cutting himself short. it's not like he had a lack of options, but somehow she never managed to get quite out of his head. his downfall, really. because he says i love you, and means it, where she says it and in her head it's somebody else. it's masochistic of him. any therapist would disapprove. his parents do. they don't get it. because the whole world sees through their veneer, as much as they try to pretend they are perfectly happy together. he makes her laugh still, and maybe one day, when she's old and grey, she'll look back and realize that there was love if she had only tried to take advantage of it. it's not a lot, but he has her, which is more than other people can say. nice guys finish third, not first, or last, apparently.
