Slayers general info [Since the wiki pages don't get that detailed about specific events that occur during the series, I'm adding some supplementary info. Some of the info I'm including is a basic repeat of what can be found on the wiki since it's general knowledge, but I figure it would make more sense to go ahead and include it all. In terms of plot, I'm just focusing on the important events involving Gourry.]
As mentioned in the character wiki, Gourry's history is pretty much nilch. Basic important facts are his homeland is Elmelkia, he currently possesses the legendary Sword of Light (considered a family treasure), and is a wandering swordsman. Brief note here: the Sword of Light is a sword that basically destroyed the great beast Zanaffar and works similar to a light saber. (Fuller description will be down in the Abilities section)
Gourry first met Lina when she was attacked by bandits. At first he thought he was saving some hot chick, but realizing it was Lina, he then mistook her for a kid. Well she was young looking, short, and had a flat chest (he says this out loud, for the record), so it was a natural assumption for a guy like him. So still under that assumption, he offered to act as her guardian and help protect her as she traveled to her destination -- Atlas City. This was of course met with repeated refusals, but he did not relent, leaving Lina with little choice but to let him tag along. Thus the strange partner relationship between Lina and Gourry was born.
At first, their relationship was more of guardian-charge type of deal, with Lina staying with Gourry because she wanted his Sword of Light -- to which Gourry adamantly refused. However Gourry stayed with Lina as her protector, and as time went by and they got pulled into various battles, they became more like team partners and were able to read each other's minds.
To make a potentially long story short, the two made a number of friends, and a greater number of enemies during their travels. First enemy-turned-friend was Zelgadis, who unintentionally dragged them into a plot with the Red Priest Rezo and the summoning of Shabranigdu, one of the demon lords. Lina Giga Slave'd him, and all was great. Lina and Gourry went back to traveling on their own to Atlas City, only to run into Amelia. Well, Gourry found her. More crazy antics ensued, and they soon learned that Rezo apparently was alive again. As a bonus, there were wanted posters for Lina, Gourry, and Zelgadis. Amelia, being the girl of GREAT JUSTICE, turn them into the bounty hunters, Zangulus and Vrumugun. But they manage to escape, with Gourry dueling against Zangulus. Note: from then on, Zangulus continued to chase after Gourry for swordfighting.
Eventually they get to Sairaag and meet with a girl named Sylphiel. Gourry had actually met her before and had helped the city somehow. What that was is never explained. But ever since Sylphiel has crushed on Gourry. Sylphiel is also one of the few people Gourry remembers the name of despite the long stretches of time that passes between their meetings. This is only because he remembers her for her cooking. With her help they continued to investigate and discover that Rezo was not alive again, but that he was just a copy. Zelgadis rejoined the party at this point. After some time, the group battled against the Copy Red Rezo and succeed.
The next major adventure involved the Demon Dragon King Gaav and Hellmaster Phibrizzo. Like before, Gourry's role was mostly the sidekick and was there as Lina's partner during traveling and battling. It was only toward the end of NEXT that he plays a bigger role. In attempting to figure out how to defeat Gaav, the group had been looking for the Claire Bible. Eventually they were able to find the place where the original source was and Lina was able to read it.
However, Gaav was there and there was much fighting. When things started taking a turn for the worse, Hellmaster Phibrizzo, under the guise of a human child, revealed himself and killed Gaav. But that wasn't his main objective. He wanted Lina to use the Giga Slave in attempt to destroy the world. When she refused, he did what most villains did: take a hostage. So he chose Gourry, who later gets brainwashed and put under Phibrizzo's control. Gourry actually fought against his friends while in this state and revealed how powerful he really could be. Really, it's ridiculous how much power an untapped Sword of Light can be. Neither the Dragon Slave nor the Ragna Blade do any damage. Note: when he was about to make the final strike on Lina, he was able to come to his senses just long enough to hesitate for Zangulus (surprise!) to appear and help them escape.
He was next seen encased in a crystal, and since Phibrizzo was an ass, he threatened to destroy Gourry. This forced Lina to use Giga Slave, which summoned the Lord of Nightmares herself. Because of that, Lina's whole existence was taken over by the Lord of Nightmares. So when she ascended upward, Gourry chased after her, saying he needed her. But upon reaching her, she disappeared. ...Only to reappear in his arms! The Lord of Nightmares had basically released her and let them go. In probably the only and most romantic scene in the entire series, the two embraced and shared a kiss. While spinning in the air.
When they returned to earth, they were hugging each other. However, they did not remember the event at all, so when they realized their position, they freaked. Afterward they tell the group they couldn't remember what happened, with only Gourry remembering his chased after Lina. They do remember that something important happened there, just not sure what.
After that, they continued on with their travels, not knowing where they would go but it didn't really matter, particularly with Gourry.
Personality:
Gourry is well known for his rather lack of brain. He's simple-minded, but not outright stupid. He's actually fairly knowledgeable, but only in regards to certain or general/common things. However, this is only for everyday, mundane things. Concepts about history, legends, or anything like that that would be considered well-known are lost to him and must be explained (several times). Complicated ideas have to be explained to him -- though he may fall asleep if its too long or complicated, and the risk of him still completely understanding it are high. This also means he can be very slow and dense about things, so it may take him a while to come to full speed about things.
Another notable trait is his poor memory, something that even he acknowledges. He can forget things that happened just three hours ago, and can forget the names of people and enemies he's met and fought against. However, he can remember specific events and people, particularly if they're related to food, and he has the capability of remembering at least the basic of basics. He also can remember locations and where they are, so he doesn't get lost like that. Other than that, his memory sucks. Period.
That said, Gourry does have a lot of common sense and responds to things like an average person. If things look weird or seem unnatural, he perceives them as such and will react appropriately and even state so outright. This also means his own remarks and commentary usually fall in the basic line of thinking, though usually even more basic since Gourry thinks things through in a much more simpler and down to earth way than the rest of the group. While his ideas and proposals have some logic to them, and would work in normal situations, there's usually some flaw, such as not accounting for certain complications that could be easily overlooked because of special circumstances that render simple solutions moot.
Also, despite his mental failings, Gourry is actually quite intuitive and observant, noticing things that others might not. This most likely stems from the fact that he's an excellent swordsman and such skills are necessary when in battle. For instance, he can easily read a situation within moments and figure out the weaknesses in his foes. He is also able to sense when danger, an enemy, or some powerful foe is nearby, sometimes even before the rest of the party. He was also able to tell that Xellos was a Monster long before Xellos personally revealed it, and also that one of their foes was immortal, or at least powerful enough that they wouldn't be able to kill him. His reasoning is that the situation and circumstances would have been more than enough to make those deductions. That also means that even though he can be pretty slow on the uptake, when it comes to battle plans, he can figure things out, some more easily than others. However, if the plan is too complicated and involves too much magic, then he has a little more difficulty.
Gourry can make dry remarks and commentary, and he's actually quite witty, if simple. If he has to give an explanation, he gives really short, very simplified nutshell explanations that at least gets the basic gist of things. He also has very little tact and can be direct/blunt about things, especially when he's pointing them out. If someone is acting differently than usual, he'll show his surprise and comment on it.
Really, he's just an "all natural" type of guy, and behaves like a normal guy. The only thing he presents himself as is a swordsman, and even then he doesn't really openly brag about his skills. He uses his skills to speak for him. But he's a natural nice guy, particularly toward girls (it's something his grandmother told him to be), so he has this natural sort of charm to him, and he doesn't even try to be. His good looks help, of course. He's polite, helpful, and doesn't mind doing the hard manual labor. He's a guy after all, it only makes logical and practical sense. He's loyal not only to Lina, but also toward his friends. He will do what he can help protect them and will look out for their safety. He's also really good toward kids, as evidenced when he first met Lina and later when they first meet Phibrizzo when he's under the kid disguise.
Lina probably reflects the most about his personality, and their relationship is rather important. Though they started off as just "the guy looking after kid", their relationship developed considerably during their travels. Gourry is very much the "older brother"/"guardian" type, especially toward Lina. Being older than all of them, he can take on the mature role and bring everyone back to the situation at hand. This really shines through with his interactions with Lina, who acts more like a loud, rash, spoiled brat. Despite always getting dragged along and pulled into her schemes, Gourry is the one who will always try to keep her in check. No matter how he may complain about it, he seems to have a rather high tolerance. He usually just lets her do what she wants because he knows reasoning with her otherwise is usually pointless (and it would be less painful), there are times when he at least makes the attempt. If she gets really ridiculous, he'll physically restrain her and hold her back while trying to talk her out of it. If that option isn't possible, he'll just tell everyone to run and duck for cover.
The two also make an excellent team. Due to their time together, Gourry has come to understand her fairly well and can tell what she plans to do, particularly in a fighting situation. But he can also read her temper and moods, as well as recognize what could set her off.
But despite her failings and explosive nature, Gourry really cares for Lina. He may not say it or really show it, but her safety is important to him and if anything happens to her, he'll freak. Prime example is when Lina fakes her death via falling off a floating land mass during a battle with a powerful Monster. When she appears and reveals that she only faked it, Gourry walks up to her and bops her hard on the head. He then tells her to consider his feelings next time. He also tells Lina, when asked, that he planned to protect her for the rest of his life. Of course he says this in a rather casual way and while putting some meat (or was that a potato -- hard to tell) on a stick to cook.
However, it should be noted that despite his canon point and the events that happened, whether or not he currently realizes he actually loves her at this point is somewhat debatable. All that's known for sure is that she's important to him and his reason for living. He may never again voice this in a casual setting, but if something dramatic like that happened again, his true feelings would more than likely arise. Regardless, being the simple man that he is, so long as he's by her side he's quite happy and such romantic feelings are brushed off to the side.
Another thing to note is Gourry can be quite stubborn about certain things and won't readily give up. However, this changes in more practical situations where giving up or running away would be the wiser choice. In such cases, such as in fights, Gourry has no qualms about hightailing it out of there. He's not arrogant and knows when he's bitten off more than he could chew. Again, this ties back to his common sense. But if it's for the sake of his friends or to help buy time, he'll put his life on the line and continue to persevere. He also places this same trust in his friends. He knows he can count on them and relies on them.
He can also be rather comedic in his reactions, especially when flailing about Lina's powerful spells and yelling at her whenever he gets the brunt end of her spells. He is also not afraid to show his own fear. While he may be strong and generally brave, he can still be creeped out and scream like the best of them. In fact, he can get rather emotional, particularly about those he cares about. Again, this is another example of how Gourry behaves like an average person.
One final thing is he is very, very protective of the Sword of Light. It's a family heirloom and he won't let anyone have it without good reason. He doesn't mind letting others use it (with his consent of course), but he won't freely give it up to just anyone, including Lina. It's important to him and holds significant value.

Character Abilities:
While Gourry leaves much to be desired in the brains department, he makes up for it in his excellent swordsmanship. Be it his own Sword of Light or a temporary one, once he has his hands around a blade, he is a force to be reckoned with. It's also hinted that he is a lot stronger and has greater skill than he usually displays when the full power of the Sword of Light is untapped, but even without that Gourry is definitely far above average. He can slice trees, walls, and attack with his back turned while trying to figure something out. Of course that doesn't mean he's the best there is, and there are those who are stronger than him. Just that he could put up an excellent fight before going down.
Also, as mentioned above, Gourry is very intuitive and observant, particularly when fighting. He can read the situation and able to figure out some strategy. This also means he can read people fairly well, though not perfectly. He also has some sort of intuition on whether a person is "normal" or not. It might not be immediate, but it would not take him long to figure out if someone was a normal human or had some special strength to them.
He's also rather durable, no thanks to Lina's abuse. He can take a good deal of damage, both physical and magical. Gourry is also fairly acrobatic and agile, able to jump high and flip around.
Gourry is also probably one of the few who could rival Lina's appetite, eating just about as much she does.
Now for some notes about the
Sword of Light. It is a magical sword and works like a light saber in that its a beam of energy. This energy is formed by the wielders willpower, or mental energy, and can cut through both physical and astral entities. It's highly effective against the Monsters of the Slayer-verse. Gourry only uses the Sword of Light's true form during difficult battles. Otherwise, he uses a regular blade that attaches to the inside of the hilt. [As a side note, I doubt he'll be using the Sword of Light much, if at all, but if there are problems please let me know!]
Possessions: SWORD OF LIGHT. Oh and his armor, but I'm not sure if that counts as possession...

Heeey, Lina! Where'd you go?
[sigh] Don't tell me she's run off to chase after some treasure again...but did she have to leave me behind!?
Well, I better ask around. [a pause] ...What was this town again? [looking around before he realizes something] Aaaah!! How did I even get here??
Log/Prose sample: [in continuation of the above first sample]
Gourry stood in the middle of the street, glancing around with a puzzled frown. "Now that I think about it, this doesn't look like the town we were at before," he said as he scratched his head, his confusion mounting. Of course, this was only after ten minutes of walking around and calling out for Lina. One would think he would have noticed sooner, if not upon waking.
With a sigh, the swordsman continued walking forward, still puzzling over his predicament. "Hmmm...we were visiting different shops...Lina was looking for something..." Think, Gourry, think!
At this point he had stopped in the middle of the road, sitting cross-legged, a look of deep concentration settled on his face. "Then something...something...!" One second. Two seconds. Three sec--"No good," he said with a sigh, his head falling forward in defeat. "I can't remember!"
Of course, the event he was trying to recall was the moment he had touched the music box and promptly brought into Splendorocity. But unable to do so, he turned his attention to the strange thing that he had found on his neck. Holding up the seal, he tilted his head slightly as he stared at it quizzically. "And where'd this come from?" he asked, tapping it. "Lina would probably know...but she's not here!" he groaned.
Letting the strange thing fall back down, he stood up and once again looked around. "Guess I'll try finding one of the local restaurants." Or hear for any of the tell-tale sounds of destruction.
