I've been having a rough time with my latest paper. I have no idea if I've managed to provide a thesis, or even cogent words, in my first crack at the introduction. Tell me if this makes any sense:

Nova engages with a dizzying number of social concerns, from race and gender on to economic issues. A philosophical question drives the search for Illyrion: how far can we go and remain human? Nova posits a far-future world where technology has drastically changed the face of humankind; it seems to be a utopia, but digging under its surface reveals a kind of existential ennui that rots at the world's core alongside the economic issues. It may cause the economic issues. Nova examines the two poles of the technological advancement conundrum and cuts its Gordian knot; the book argues that a third option, exemplified in the traditions of art, provides the answer to our back-and-forth panic about technology.
