Uh, make sure it's not something you're too attached to. Nails ruin fabric pretty sufficiently.

I've always liked cats but the sentiment doesn't seem to be the same. I'll try that but Arthur's pretty willful.

Yeah, it seems like it. Well. Good luck with him. If all else fails, try hissing back at him. It weirds them out and they back down.

Hissing back at him? I think it confuse him and then annoy him.

Oh, it doesn't work on MY cats. Please, they don't listen. But it works on rescue cats sometimes.

Yes! The confused time is good. That means they've backed down from anger and are less likely to be aggressive with you next time. The annoyed part, though, could be problematic, but they're more likely to bat at you.
