Yeah... Not sure how long ago though.

[the sound of buttons being pushed]

Been gone... 6 months in City time. A couple of weeks for me though.

Yeah, I 'eard time passes funny 'ere.

How'd you manage to get out? Mate of mine reckons you get stuck here proper, like.

I don't know how I left... although I was needed in my world. Although I think that obligation has been filled...

[sound of rustling]

Yep! I'm dead! Can't do much there anymore!

Anyway, from what I remember, you can't control your entrances and exits to the City... ever.

[There's a pause as Ray processes that.]

What d'you mean you're dead? You wouldn't bloody be talkin' to me if you were dead, you twonk.

Do you think the fact that I've died really matters to the City which pulls people... things from all over time and space?

Well... yeah. Things like being dead are usually pretty important to consider.

Maybe, but the City defies all senses of logic.

Although, maybe I'm just used to strange things considering aliens trying to kill off humanity in my world.

Oh... forgive me. I've been terribly rude. I'm Kamishiro Tsurugi, of the noble house of Discabil. I'm pleased to make your acquaintance.

Seems more like it's the folk 'ere who're defyin' logic.

In your case, I reckon you've been and watched one too many sci-fi flicks.

DS Ray Carling, Manchester and Salford Police.

Sci-fi... No...

If only my phone's camera was working, then I'd show you. Damn... the one time I could use Sasword! Still, you do realize some of the people on the network are exactly human at times right?

Of the British police... interesting.

I realise I've been told that. I say show me some solid evidence, and maybe I'll start believin' it.

Aye, well. I 'ad to stick somethin' on the end of me name, if you were gonna start goin' on about 'ouses.

Heh. Very true. I would guess my house isn't that important anymore since I was its last heir, and I'm obviously dead now.

Find me in a few days, and I'll stand on top of proving it. I need to talk with my ward first about a development of mine. That or you could try finding someone else here, who's alien or magical to prove it.

Oh, for the love of... Does being a chink make you thick, or somethin'? If you're talkin' to me, you ain't very dead. All right?

If you can prove it in a few days, I'll think about it, right? But before then, I'm not goin' out of my way to try and prove somethin' I don't believe in.

中国人?!日本人よ! ...er... I am not Chinese, I am Japanese.

I am very much dead, see listen.

[a very irregular heartbeat can be heard, one which shouldn't be able to sustain life]

You've read the City literature which explain the City's equivalence of the dead right?

[translation: Chinese?! [I'm] Japanese!]

Fine, Jap. Pretty much the same thing, in't it?

[A pause as Ray listens, and tries to work that one out.]

Wouldn't be an 'eartbeat at all if you were dead, would there? You oughta get that looked at, or sommat.

Suprisin'ly, I 'aven't 'ad much time for readin' jus' yet. I've been too busy tryin' to sort out more important things.

The City gives even the dead a mild heartbeat, just not one like the living... and again, I'm dead. I'm not exactly worried about my health as if I was alive.

You should probably read it. It may help you adjust to the City quicker.

...and no, it isn't the same. Would you want me to call you an American or maybe Welsh, Scottish or Irish because you speak English or are from the British Isles? The Japanese Islands may have been a former colony of the region known as China, but we have long since distanced ourselves from the Chinese.
