Alright so I went to Jay Peak for the weekend. I wanna write a story/ a few stories on this trip.. maybe I will, maybe I won't. Regardless, highlights of the skiing aspect:
Saturday:
-Someone stole my poles.
-I lost my ear protection.
-I decided to rent 170 length skies instead of 160s. (Faster but harder to control.)
-For my first run, I took the aerial tram up to the Vermonter and took it down. I certainly felt the difference but didn't fall. Silly trail to try new skies on. It was awesome. The wait was like a half hour.
-I found two members of my group in the lodge; I joined with them.
-We took a ton of intermediate trails. All the trails on Jay Peak are long, so each run lasted a satisfactory amount of time.
-Tried a black diamond and wiped out.
-Early in the afternoon, all the runs we were taking, especially the very wind exposed Goat Run, iced over like mad. This made skiing very difficult.
-A combination of ice and lack of visibility (it was snowing heavily) led to my most glorius wipe out:
- I once again lost my group towards the end of the day, so I decided to run down Goats Run again. By now, it was completely ice. I flew through the air, landed on my head, knocked my goggles off my face, and rolled around on the slope for a bit. It was pretty kickass.
-I finished off the day with two more runs on intermediate trails with my new ski buddy, Brennan.
Sunday:
- A much, much more successful day, skiing-wise.
- Brennan and I warmed up on the Goat Run, which had way better powder today.
- Took the aerial tram up, took the Vermonter down.
- Took some more intermediate trails, saw new parts of the mountain.
- Took the aerial tram up, took the Vermonter down, and then on the way down, ventured onto the Bonadventure Glade (located right next to the infamous mogul trail.
- Glade skiing is skiing through forest.
- The glade actually had moguls in it. I began to get the hang of moguls, and I never hit a tree. Go me.
- Saw more of the mountain.
- Took the quad back up, took a black diamond down!!!!!!!!!
- I dominated the black diamond with perfect turns. I only slipped (and never wiped out) when I hit two patches of ice. It was a damned steep, and damned long, hill.
- Took some more runs until lunch.
- Joined up with the whole group and took North Glade, which is insane.
- I twisted my knee, almost had a tree rip off my arm, and fell into insanely deep powder. I was forced to improve to make it out of the woods, and I did. The second half of that glade went much smoother.
- Back to lodge, retrieved telemark skies (skies without the heel attatched.)
- Learned how to telemark, and finished off the day with two runs down an intermediate run on said telemark skies.
Very educational day. Happily, I've kept up the tradition of getting injured on Jay Peak.
Bedtime.
