Good morning, darlings!
Yesterday my poor nephbo 1.0 was on a field trip to a farm and had a really bad asthma attack :( :( :( (He is fine now!! BUT STILL) But he was only getting something like 48% oxygen when the EMTs showed up (also, how stupid is it that kids aren't allowed to carry their inhalers at school but have to keep it with the nurse? This makes NO SENSE to me and I don't like it and it scares me!)
Anyway, BFF called me after and asked if I could come over and hang with him and 2.0 for a few hours while she ran errands and of course I said yes. He was doing much, much better ... to the point where he tried to use it as an excuse not to go to bed :p But it was a worrisome afternoon.
I am finally watching pilots! The first 3 episodes of Last Resort (with BFF), Arrow, and Beauty and the Beast.
First, Last Resort:
I am totally fine watching this regularly, in a totally non-fandomy way, because I'm curious to see how it unfolds. Either the captain is the most masterful bluffer ever or he really has gone completely around the bend and his crew doesn't know it. And at this point, I don't really care which. BFF and I watched the first two eps on Wednesday and the 3rd last night when she got home, so we marathoned it pretty quickly ... we will see how we feel about it on a more leisurely scale.
Arrow:
Hahahah, oh, love. (Full disclaimer: NEVER READ THE COMICS) This is exactly the kind of TV that makes me happy, for all it's logical inconsistencies. Secret identities! Family angst out the wazoo! Daddy issues! Snarkiness!
First, the things I will have to lovingly mock: I crack up about the fact that a hood and a smear of green paint totally obstructs his features to the point that Adam Hunt, three inches away from him, is unable to recognize him as the recently returned billionaire playboy. Really, Adam? Really? Ok, fine, I'll allow him raw panic and confusion making his mind go blank, it's all fine. Even though then he hires utter douche new head of security (ahahaha, and the expression on Detective-Laurel's-Dad's face - and that was the least surprising reveal, ever - when he was introduced to Drake or whatever his name is, that was PRICELESS. Total 'I can not believe you hired this asshat, what is he even wearing?' I am totally fond of this guy already, with his man!pain)
I am purposefully *withholding* mocking on the crossbow and all the fabulous arrows, in the possibly-misguided belief that the explanation of what really was on the island would explain how a guy who has been stranded for 5 years without a razor or shampoo was able to put together arrows that can explode, release grappling hooks, hack into computer systems and perform data transfer commands. I am just going to GO with that.
Also he may or may not have a magical healing touch.
Relationships: Laurel and he = so boring, oh man, the dull angst of it all. Also, STALKING. Seriously, vigilante superhero guys, stop using your powers for stalking, it's not sexy. Laurel and Tommy, on the other hand, = awesome and snarky. So THAT is great. Also, so is Digg. Digg ROCKS. Now THAT is the way to stalk. (Also, the sexual tension between Oliver and his sister was like, five thousand times more than him and Laurel. Her character is great.)
The evil Queen ROCKS, too. Hahaha, I admit, I did NOT expect that.
So yes, much enjoyment from me and I will happily watch because there will be lots of action sequences and tricks and brooding.
Beauty and the Beast:
Ok, first of all, they did a pretty good job of making Cat actually awesome (if stupid, why the hell did she put away her gun when she got a phone call? IT ONLY WORKED OUT BECAUSE: TV!) But she rocked on the hand-to-hand combat front and the smart-when-not-with-Vincent front. And I like her snarky partner a lot.
I am a little disappointed they went with 'lets make Vince really pretty 90% of the time and he only beasts-out with action'. Boo! Although I guess it DOES give him more scope for moving around the rest of the world and not just underground-lairing it. But still!
I think that it has a lot of potential in marrying the case-of-the-week format in with the longer arc, which is one of the marks of a show that is both successful/approachable and satisfying from my fannish perspective.
So that's actually a pretty decent 3 for 3, particularly after the Chicago Fire/666 Park Avenue blahs I had.
I STILL need to watch Revolution, but that may actually be it on my Fall Drama Pilot tour, unless I wander across a hidden forgotten gem.
